The last DT album was good, but I like Sons of Apollo better than anything DT has done since SFAM. Sons shows what might have been possible had DT kept Derek Sherinian and allowed him creative input. He's far more of a real rock keyboardist than Rudess, who brings out all of Petrucci's bad Berklee tendencies.

I'll be curious to see what this album is like.

it's been too long since they've done one. That one that came out in 2010 or 2011 was a masterpiece.

Mike Mangini is a fantastic drummer, but compared to Portnoy his playing sounds very basic and out of place in DT. I find his drums in DT boring, and I've never found him to be a boring drummer before.

I know, right? Marco needs to be in a better project. Not shit like this, which is a snoozefest. :\

Even the band seems bored with it, which is never a good thing.

Edit: Since I love a good Marco derail, jump to 2:10. His vibrato is so outrageously good.

This made the 16 year old DT fanboy in me very happy.

I think Portnoy had the right idea back when he quit. They could have used some time away from pumping out album after album. At the same time, I think around that same time they were breaking into a higher level of popularity and I can see why some guys didn't want to press pause right then.

The last DT album was pretty damn good but I won't really be a happy DT fan unless Portnoy were back in the band. No disrespect to Mangini and I love everything Mangini's done outside of DT. Especially the LaBrie solo stuff. It's mostly nostalgia for me, DT and Vai were all I listened to from like 14-18, I was just as big of a Portnoy fan as I was a Petrucci fan.

I agree with many points you guys bring up, I also am a dreamer and hold hope for a album/shows with Portnoy but also without Rudess. I know the odds are better on a lotto ticket than that happening but dare to dream. Kevin Moore doing anything or for that matter Portnoy coukd just bring Derek with him.
