    I agree, muting while playing the blues is definitely not chugging. Youtube is filled with metal cover videos that have some terrible muting technique in them

    What cracks me up about this the most is when I play around my non-metal guitar player friends. They do stuff that wows me, but then they watch me and look equally clueless at what I'm doing as Pete and Cap. I always just assumed it was cause I sucked...

    I know what you mean. I had a friend who played the blues and classic rock and just had this really good sense of melody and could play really well, but when he'd see me play, he'd call me a "shredder." But I'm not a shredder at all. My lead playing is pretty slow compared to people actually considered shredders, but from his perspective, it was super fast. And to be honest, I never thought about it, but while I saw him palm mute a lot, I never saw him ever "chug." It seems insanely simple to me, but there are a lot of techniques metal guitarists take for granted that most guitarists never use.
