I haven't watched any "Vocal coach reacts to James Labrie"-videos, but even on the best DT albums I think there's some serious flaws in his singing. A lot of the times he sounds like he's sort of straining at the top of his range and his articulation is very poor - it's basically impossible to understand a lot of what he's singing.
I wasn’t so much speaking of their vocal capabilities, but more so me being a Dream Theater fanboy and having this idea in my head that all my non-musician friends would hear this amazing music, odd time signatures, unison guitar/keyboard runs, crazy drumming, etc. and fall in love with it the way I did. You could substitute Steve Vai for Dream Theater and it’d mean the same thing, because I certainly did that with his music and my friends back in the day as well.

When I played some DT to my friends they would at first like the music, but then most people found Labrie's voice ridiculous and couldn't get into the music because of that.

When I saw this at first I thought I posted this drunk, and was about to use the Rosanne Barr defense.

I am very happy that we have this consensus here, that October Rust is, indeed, an amazing album.
