So... Dream Theater looks like they might be jumping the shark with this one. There's CGI characters, a map to unlock.. I don't know if this is a new album of music or an RPG to rival The Witcher.

I so want a great new DT album. I do not have high hopes for this.

Best thread title ever, especially with the name of that album

I have hopes for it.

Hopefully, they're going back to the idea of writing an album that "flows" together as a story and IF it is anything like Metropolis: Part 2.

Then it'll be absolutely incredible.

Over the last few albums, they've run hot/cold, hot/cold in terms of how I like their albums. I liked their first post-Portnoy CD but the last one was a solid "meh." The song titles & stupid marketing campaign leading up to this release just reek of disappointment. And when did Petrucci become one of the Duck Dynasty clan?? WTF is up with his hillbilly beard? Ugh.

:dgaf: and haven't since Moore left.

Sure. I guess it all depends on which you album you think began the decline. I thought the first album with Mangini was alright but other than that, the last one I listened to with any regularity was Scenes from a Memory.

Devil's advocate - I'm cautiously hopeful.

It's a silly prospect for an album, and an attempt to recapture what some consider a high-water-mark for the band, sure. But, I'm curious to hear what Mike Mangini can do as he continues to grow into the band, and while I share pretty much everyone's dislike for Rudess's "look at me try to be a guitarist!" solos, I also think his playing pretty much MADE Octavarium, especially the extended intro on the title track. And, I haven't kept tabs on DT much lately, but their black self-titled had a couple tracks come up on a Satriani Spotify station I've been listening to lately, and I found myself enjoying them all.

I wouldn't pre-order this... But, I'll be willing to hear them out. They've got the potential for at least one more great album in there, I think.

They've always had the potential. The problem is that the trend with them for over a decade now has been towards more and more 11 minute guitar and ipad synth solos. They got back to basics a little bit with A Dramatic Turn of Events but even then, there were a lot of 4-5 minute songs with 7 minutes of unlistenable bullshit tacked on.

Heh. Not bad - very Rush-like, but that's ok. Petrucci's solo is, for the most part, great, though he briefly dips into "JP plays scale runs" territory. The prog-y stuff after that doesn't really fit, but I never eally cared for The Dance Of Eternity, anyway.

Again, it's got potential.

It's like JP's transition to turn Dream Theater into Rush is complete.

It just ended up being 'Roll the Bones' Rush, not '2112' Rush.
Fuck it, I liked Roll The Bones, so I'm fine with it.

I liked it. I'll take prog rock Dream Theater over TRYINGTOOHARDTOBEHEAVYASFVCK Dream Theater. Their more modern rock and hard rock songs are a lot better than their modern attempts to be heavy.

James' vocals are getting duller and duller, though.

....aaaand it's already been pulled down.

For anyone who missed it, the beginning at least is pretty good - very Rush-y, but it manages to both sound fairly "pop-y," considering the song is driven by a fast distorted guitar that's clearly in an odd time signature. It's a good combination.

This intro sounds like I'm watching QVC or playing Wii Sports.

Edit: These lyrics. "people just don't have the time for music anymore/nobody seems to care"

Does the concept of this album involve people conversing over a game of bridge in the common room of their nursing home?
