Sykes wrote a ton of cheesy shit but had amazing chops and vibrato so we all respect him. Lynch is the same way. If all you've heard is Dokken, his solo instrumental stuff is definitely worth a listen. Jump to 1:30 to skip the intro.

That's my point, I've not heard anything. Pretty much every other well known guitarist I've at least heard or know of in some context, somehow. I don't know anyone who references him, I don't know any folklore about why he is where he is, literally not a clue. And I'm pleased to see in this thread it's not just me being ignorant.
