Why can't Gibson buy Kiesel instead?

Because Henry isn't CEO anymore. That would have been the perfect purchase for them.

I wonder if this is one of the reasons they shut down the storefront?

Well, assuming it's true, is that it would mean that either whoever owns Mesa was bizarrely insistent about only Gibson being able to carry on their legacy, or it would mean that none of the other companies already based in California, an expensive state to do business in no one is exactly clamoring to bust into if they don't already have a presence there, wanted to make an offer.

The "ear to their ground" dudes posting it on twitter walked it back and got rid of the "very reliable source" bit.

If it is true, it would either mean that both Mesa and Gibson have better operational security than most governments, or the people in charge thought it was a good idea if the hundreds of employees (as well as the distributers and endorsers with close relationships) that work for Mesa heard about it from a Twitter post first.

That being said, there are one or two facets that check out. I don't know how the ownership of Mesa Boogie works, I don't think anyone is really privy to that, but if the person or people who own it did want to sell it, they would want to do it before the Biden administrations tax policies go into effect. In which case either they are cutting it ridiculously close, or this has been underwraps for a while. Most people who wanted to sell off millions of dollars of assets before the Biden Administration got rid of the beautiful signature Trump tax code got moving back in March at the latest.

Mesa does operate in California and coronavirus is still in effect. So it's also not out of the question that someone would have a "I'm too old for this shit" moment and want to sell and start a relaxing retirement.
