Man this thread makes me appreciate what we have now so much. No more horrific practice amps, craptacular pedals, garbage rack mounts or other utter junk being foisted on us as the only choices. Too bad the eleventy billion options we have nowadays weren't available back then.

The truth behind Juke Box Hero: Ugly Guitar > Crap Distortion Pedal > Cheap Rack Mount > Garbage Amp = #ROCKSTAR!

Fuck yeah. My first amp was a Peavey Rage 108, and after a couple years I upgraded to the Bandit 112 around 1992 or so. It was such a massive difference, that amp ripped!

My first amp was a Gorilla. It had a sticker on the back proclaiming that "Nothing screams like a Gorilla!" which was true, but not in a good way. It was truly an abomination of the worst kind of solid state fizz. The first thing I did to try and rectify the situation was to get a Rocktek distortion pedal. Matters didn't improve...

Entry level gear is so much better now than it was back then.

My first effects unit back in 1984 or so. Meet the Yamaha REX-50:

    REX50

It's basically an SPX-90 in non-rackmount form. Who the fuck other than 17-year-old stupid kids like me wanted an effects unit in that form factor???

Sound was pretty good, actually (the SPX-90 was a studio mainstay well into the 1990s). The REX was also remarkably durable. It made a couple long moves with me and was massively abused, and still worked perfectly.

My first real amp, prior to that I plated through mt Dads stereo aux input. The Bandit was a kickass little amp
