as I finally picked it up from my tech after a nice refurbish. Obligatory red curtain NGD pic.
I ended up deciding to keep the guitar as is. The only mods I added were gold Schaller straplocks. I didn't want to put cliplocks on this one. Sonically I said it was dark in tone but that was when I plugged into an amp I've since forgotten. It's still dark through my 5153 but it's much more bearable and adjustable.
Compared to my comfort zone RGs, this puts up a lot of fight, which I like in a Les Paul. There are 2 things that I'm still trying to adjust to. First, the frets are smaller than my usual jumbos and possibly the originals worn down a bit so bending and fast runs require a bit of an adjustment. Second, the neck joint. It's the most blocky bolt on joint I own to the point that it jabs into my palm if I go full aggro. I'm getting flashbacks on my first RG copy with a similar joint. This one takes more time but I'm willing to bear it because these are minor gripes.
All said and done, the thing roars like a beast. All the sustain in the world is worth the slight upper fret discomfort. I can nail that one note on Parisienne Walkways without the aid of a boost or even turning the gain right up. The 59/Custom pair have aged pretty well and I'll probably hang on to them for some time before planning a change. Definitely a fun alternative to my chestnuts.
It's no real Gibson but who cares. It's got the look and sound. Plus I scored a Gibson case for half price due to a previous disgruntled customer.
