    NGD: The 90's Iceman Cometh

OK, not technically an Iceman, but a 1995 Greco Mirage M-90. The Iceman/Mirage was a design collaboration between Hoshino Gakki (Ibanez) and Kanda Shokai (Greco) and were built along side each other at the FujiGen factory. The Greco versions were mostly only sold on the Japanese domestic market.

This one has some dents and dings, but it came with its original case and plays absolutely beautifully. Not sure exactly what pickups are in it, but they look factory. They seem to be medium output, plenty of mids, but not overly exciting. Overall I'm super stoked. I've loved the Iceman since I was a kid and while I did have an ICT700, I have wanted a classic one for years. This has both the split abalone/MOP inlays and the classic headstock shape I love too, so I had to jump on it.

The only thing I'm not thrilled about with the Mirage is the 24.75" scale length. That's taking some getting used to for sure. I also need to re-slot the nut for the thicker gauge strings I'm running, but that's to be expected.

I also picked up a mint 5153 combo locally for a solid price, so I have been playing both like crazy. The 1x12" combo seems to be a little lacking in low end at lower volumes, but is sounds great at jam volumes. Given I bought this as a home practice/recording amp, I'm a little disappointed in that. Might need to mess around with dialing it in a bit more or throw an EQ in the loop to correct that. It sounds absolutely beast through my Randall 2x12, but doing that defeats the point of it being a combo.

Either way, the Mirage + that 5153 is a killer combo. I recorded a quick little clip here if anyone wants to hear what it sounds like:

Me too! Super stoked to have it, let alone it be in such beautiful shape. You can hardly even find pictures of the old 80s/90s soft cases.

Here's an old Ibanez Destroyer case:

I will say, it doesn't exactly offer much protection lol, maybe that's why they're so rare.
