Pickup recommendations to replace EMG HZ in Jackson DKMG

I have an old (~2003) DKMG archtop with EMG-HZs that I haven't played in years, but looking to spruce it up and play some metal again. Old threads suggest EMG 81/85s as a good swap, but its been a hot minute since I've looked into metal gear, and I'm thinking there might be some newer pickups that I'm not aware of that might be better.

I don't really have a well-defined metal sound I'm after, but definitely want something tighter and grittier than these POS EMG-HZs.

    Thanks for any advice!

    EMG 81/60.
EMG 57/66 or Het Set if you want more girth and output.

If hzs are passive are you not better looking at passive pickups instead of emgs or you'll need to swap pots as well?

For passive go tried and true:

Duncan bridge jb, distortion custom of invader. Neck 59 or jazz

What kind of metal tones do you like and what kind of amp do you plan on using for this?

I'd say keep it passive and go with a monster passive set like the Pegasus/Sentient set, which is great for all kinds of metal.

Obviously, if you go actives (81/60, 81/85, 57/66, etc.,) you have to change pots, input jack, and add a battery.

If you stay passive, you can keep the pots and input jack - I have preferences on that, but that's not important.

    Active: 81/60 or Het Set

    Passive: Distortion / 59

    Just my thoughts.
All I can ask is that I suck a little less each time I pick up my guitar...

I'm getting bored of saying Duncan Distortion, but that's literally what you need.

Failing that, DiMarzio D'Activator or Evo.
