Mangini owns everyone and is super nice about it.

That was 1000% what they were trying to do Not too subtle about it either, but it tells you whether the guy has a sense of humor under pressure and can go with the flow or stresses, so definitely good to know.

The fact that they went all free form jazz, and he just hung right in there and tracked his way through it, blew my fucking mind.

Although I enjoyed A Dramatic Turn of Events, I would have enjoyed it a LOT more if it sounded more like that audition, especially Petrucci's playing.

Not listened yet, but that audition was about more than just the music. They went for the guy most like them: North American, kids, age.

Not to take anything away from Mangini (dug him since Extreme) but his display of "bus chops" got him the gig just as much as his drum chops.

There was no one in that group with more chops than Mangini. A few of them, most notably Marco Minnemann. were in the same league, but the dude is one of the top five rock drummers on the planet. So yeah, it was about personality and style, since other than Aquiles Priester and Derek Roddy, any of them could have easily fit in musically.
