Mangini's Dream Theater Audition - Just the music

This is awesome. I watched the video way back when, but never just the music. I thought everyone did a great job (especially Minnemann) but listening to this it's pretty obvious why Mike ended up getting the gig. He absolutely crushes it, even during Rudess's stupid ass circus music parts that nobody likes.

And a couple of spot on YT comments:

Its crazy, Mangini is watching like a hawk for any hints where its going, none of the guys are giving him anything because they are so used to playing with each other but still Mike sticks the landing, brilliant to watch and hear.
The reason Mangini won is because he was like a piano player on the drums. He listened to everyone as much as he pushed for himself. He did more research, and knew exactly how the other members thought and played. He showed his licks and ambidexterity, but listened as well instead of trying to lead the original guys. He showed respect.

Starting at 3:06, it looks like Rudess and Trucci are trying to fuck with him, but he's like "nah man, I got this."

Talk about nailing an audition. That was pretty sweet.

I agree that Mike was the best one for the gig at that time. Today, I'd much rather hear Aquilles playing with the band since his playing style is more inline with what Portnoy would write (probably what the DT members wanted to get away from). Shame that he was either really nervous or just played too timid during his audition because he plays so confidently now.
