    Michael Jackson's Drummer studio videos.

This is so fantastic, and way more impressive than a bunch of overplayed weird-metered nonsense.

    Pure talent:

I've watched this numerous times and it's still blows me away. Playing in the pocket is an understatement. And from the subtle but extremely tight and busy high hat variations, to the stick twirls, everything is done with pure finesse.

And that last hit always gets me every damn time.

This. To get that gig you'd have to be badass.

I have never understood this saying. "Playing in the pocket". Does that mean hes playing a little bit ahead of the beat? Thats what it sounds like to me.

"In the pocket" simply means that a group of musicians (traditionally a jazz rhythm section) is perfectly in sync. There can be variations on who is ahead of or behind the beat, even within that group, but the unit is functioning as one.

IMO, it's more like when all instruments are really "locked" together in the groove.

Exactly. In high school I did big band jazz, and the teacher hammered us on this. It wasn't until we had some experience under our belt and *everybody* used their ears to dictate how to play their instruments that we would fall "into the pocket." Even one tenor saxophone rushing ruins the whole thing.
