Focusrite Clarett 4Pre USB Input Gain Issue

Just overhauled my recording setup and purchased new monitors and a new interface. After doing a bunch of research I decided on the Focusrite Clarett 4pre. I did a test recording on it yesterday for the first time and the input gain knob had to be turned down to 0 to get a signal that was even workable. If I turned the channel gain up in the slightest it would immediately clip... same with channel 2 instrument input. The interface doesn't have a pad option and I'm using passive pickups. No clue where to go from here other than exchanging it for something different but I wanted to check with you guys incase you might know something I don't. Any advice helps, even if it's "fuck this thing, return it". Thanks!

Some of the older focusrite stuff had this issues. is yours a gen two? It was supposed to be "fixed" in gen two.

can you switch it from instrument to line?

You may have got a lemon and might need to return it

You could try running your guitar into a DI box and go from that into the interface...

I'm not 100% sure if it's a gen two version, it's a USB-C model so it's rather new I'm guessing. I bought it used from GC and there wasn't much info on the listing (probably a red flag).

I only tried switching to Line when I tracked bass and it made a weird continuous popping sound that didn't seem right/safe for the interface so I switched back to Instrument level.

Unfortunately I only have a JDI Radial Passive box, so I may have to get an active one for my passive pickups. I'm going to take it to GC and troubleshoot w/ them, I may just exchange it and get an Apogee or UA interface instead

Yeah no sense fighting it more than you need to. I would try something else too.
