    Need a new soundcard...

So it looks like my soundcard has decided to give up on me after 12 years... I know nothing about new ones, and am looking for a rack based one, preferably 1U. I had a saffire pro 40, and really liked the loopback function it had, so would like one with something comparable.

    Recommendations? What to look at?

    Couple of questions:
    • Mac and/or PC?
    • Budget?
    • How many inputs?
    • Do you have a Thunderbolt port on your computer?

My quickest suggestions for brands are RME, MOTU, Universal Audio, Focusrite.

    1) PC, windows 7
    2) I think i can wangle around 1k for something good as long as it lasts. The saffire pro40 lasted 11/12 years, so if the enxt one manages that long, it'll be cash well spent.
    3) 6-8 analogue ins, preferably XLR connections, but i won't cry if not, will just have to buy new leads. Need spdif. Would like some kind of loopback functionality so i can record samples from youtube etc
    4) No, but it's only an expansion card away, so that's fine.

Does everything and more but No SPDIF: https://motu.com/products/proaudio/8pre-es

If you really need SPDIF with the same unit: https://focusrite.com/usb-c-audio-in...arett-8pre-usb

The Focusrite Scarlett 18i8 should cover you needs. It has 4 XLR in but in my setup, I use a separate dedicated MIC pre for my condenser mics. It also has SPDIF and can be expanded.
The Clarret range is pretty amazing too. It came out a few months after I bought the Scarlett.
I'm very happy with mine. I've recorded Acoustic and electric guitar direct though it. The dynamic range is very good and noise levels are excellent.

With today's options, I'd get the Clarret for the thunderbolt option. Not sure if that's available on PC.

So I am looking at the focusrite stuff (USB) vs the UA Apollo (firewire), am limited to USB/Firewire as I don't have thunderbolt support on motherboard (boooo) as it's old, but don't want to upgrade the music PC as it still works absolutely fine.

However, I am slightly tempted to just upgrade the PC as well, but obviously that then incurs great cost just to get thunderbolt 3 support, and am not sure that is worth it overall?

Any advantage to thunderbolt 3 over thunderbolt 2? This for future proofing, as really want the card to last for a long time

make sure its win10 compatible. I know you're on 7, but you might go up to 10 someday.

I did try win10 on the current rig, but it was a total disaster... Might be worth a punt to try again though, but still dubious about it.

Win10 I actually like, have it on the laptop, but on the audio machine, it literally broke half the shit I use!
