You can probably get some of the lush high end harmonics type sound by using exciters too.

Are you doing separate mixes for the vinyl and the CD? I believe that's what most people do. Not like, from the ground up separate, but slightly separate.

But yeah, I agree, you do lose definition. Power Metal is a tricky one because people want like, fucking huge lead vocals too, and the vocalist probably has a specific reverb and delay they like, which makes complications. I've definitely heard way too much Power Metal to list that I felt was too vocal centric. Kai Hansen's voice and the mixing and shit on the Gamma Ray records is a good example of the guitars and vocals having their own space. His voice is kind of like, naturally high passed and restricted to the frequencies that don't step all over guitar. Some power metal I hear is like, "They should have just high passed this vocal somewhere".

    HEY GREG

    What about this?

    A) More reverb on the snare
    B) chorus and reverb on the guitars

Now it's starting to sound really classic

In the end its not a matter of right or wrong. All of us are trying to help. If you do not agree with a suggestion, its all good, but its not a pissing contest.

Congrats on the new drums that you will hate next week.
Why did you even bring up velocity then?

That kicks ass. That much verb on the snare would probably not be suitable for faster stuff or whatever, but other than that I thought it sounded good.

I dunno about chorus on the guitars all the time, unless you want that sweet vintage Zakk Wylde sound, but I certainly think it's suitable in some situations.

Now if you have the panning on the toms set just right for epic fills you are good to go.

I dont have everything on max velocity

And its STILL besides the point

Stop all that velocity nonsense now, it has nothing to do with the CORE SOUNDS OF THE DRUMS

And EVEN if it was "fake drums with max velocity all the time", it can still sound freaking monstrously AWESOME

    The new snare reverb?

It's Superior Drummers "1981 classic reverb"

I fucking LOVE it. It works so good on snare and toms to get an 80s vibe... obviously!

It has very few controls, which is perfect for me. Once there's too many controls, and I do too much "for my own ears" things starts sounding like shit.
