My favorite is when all of the soccer professionals come out of the woodwork every 4 years and try to tell you what the fuck is up and who's who and all that bullshit.
Soccer is boring to watch and boring to play. A 3-1 game is considered a high-scoring blowout. Plus, they all look pansies, running around, not using their arms. Lame sport.
I love football. I've been playing it for 15 years, and the players sure aren't "pansies". But different strokes for different folks. I sure don't see how hockey, baseball or American football is any more exciting (actually I'm one of the few Finns who doesn't like hockey very much). Playing football at a high level demands a whole lot of skill, strength and endurance plus a whole lot of tactical knowledge and eye for the game. The thing that makes football interesting is the tactical side, passing game, individual skill of the players and so on. A good sliding tackle is also nice (and the guys who complain about players lying down for a long time after getting tackled have obviously never taken a sliding tackle. Getting hit hurts - a lot, and even though the players get up and start playing after a while, they'll still be feeling it the next day)
Add me to this list... the only time I ever cared about soccer was when that Zidane guy head butted the other dude. That shit was funny with the unlimited photoshopped GIF images
I live in a housing estate where pretty much everyone is a football fan. I think the only person who hasn't been watching it is my next door neighbour, who appears to be an F1 fan (by the fact when I mute my TV when the F1 is on, I can still hear it coming through the walls).
This leads to that whenever anything happens, the entire street erupts, and then an hour later you hear the people beating the shit out of each other when someone tells them its only a game.....oh how I love english people.
I absolutely hate football, yet most people here look at me like I'm either on something or I'm not right in the head. Sorry, I know it's the nations favourite game, but I think it's shit.
I like football...but ONLY at the World Cup. And I hate the people who treat it more than just a game and take it way too seriously. I've had that look a lot at work when people ask me my opinion on a player or something football related and then they realise that I've told them before that I don't follow it, and it's as if I'm letting them down in some way because of it!
Agreed, if IRL can get some decent cars and stop riding on Danica Patrick (hehehe I made a funny), then it may help, but ALMS is definitely the sport I follow the most in the US at the moment.
Angel, something tells me that's the sort of thing you might want to learn.
FWIW, I'm not really actively watching the Cup either, but I don't fault the guys who are. It's on in the cafeteria of my office all day (actually, I fault the motherfuckers who spend all day watching it and getting paid for it ), and my coffee shop up the street from my place brought in a wide-screen TV they have hooked up to a laptop streaming ESPN3 at what's really surprisingly high resolution so they can watch while they work (they're all Algerian). It's cool that they're so into it, and that's a little contagious.
