Fat guy wants to buy a mountain bike.

Where do I start in looking for a good quality, entry level mountain bike?

The wife has hers and does her well, but I've got nothing. I haven't the slightest idea of where to start

Long story short, we plan on riding some beginner to intermediate level trails with chariot in tow for the kids.

    Help?

    Budget?

TLDR: Used 1-2 year old quality bike is generally a better deal than a brand new one. If you want an MTB to pull a trailer with, you don't want a full suspension. I pull my son + trailer around (~35lbs) on this gravel bike and while it's awesome, it's definitely a workout. I have outrageously good cardio and I'm still pretty well pooped after 20 miles or so.
