I know there are a *few* tales of superhuman down picking by Hetfield on these old tunes, but here I'm seeing an awful lot of alternate picking. Provided your upstroke isn't a bitchpick, a solid alternate picking technique is no different from straight down picking.
  2. Guitar: Theory & Playing
Hi, my band plays a song with very fast alternate picking and although I like the song in itself, I do not like to play it because when playing it, I get pain in my wrist. Does anyone know if this is normal/how to deal with it? (Or am I just being a little bitch?!)

My picking motion is definitely more up and down, like shaking hands rather than rotating my wrist. Is this something I should spend some time trying to switch to?

http://soundcloud.com/jm2484/tam10-alternate-tuning-clip I've always been a fan of alternate tunings so I tried a few things with my 8 in this clip. I ended up tuning my G string to A which gave me EBEADABE and allowed me to create this dissonant/shrill chord that you hear in the first riff...

My guitar teacher recently showed me the three note per string version of the major scale (newb stuff I know). As I've been practicing it, I've noticed that I'm doing something very weird with my picking... As I ascend the scale (going 6th string to 1st), I'm using economy picking, but when...

I know the answer to this question is 'most of them', seeing as Dino has the meanest right hand in the west, but, which Fear Factory songs (in particular) can I learn that will improve my rhythm alternate picking? Any suggestions?

I stumbled across this today and think it's worth checking out if you are into alternate tunings. Guitar Tunings Database Over 70 embeddable Guitar Tuners & Key Signature Search

I'm trying my ass off to learn my favorite parts of some paul Gilbert songs, and theres this sweet little run in the Curse of Castle Dragon where he's doing 3 notes per string descending, and I can't fucking keep up for shit. ...then during the second half, where it's all ascending seems to be...
  10. MG.ORG Status Updates
I'm sure this brings joy to everyone's weekend. It's not perfect so it may miss a few, but the embed should now work for the new format. (Well, it's not so new anymore, but you get the idea...)

It's been a while now that I've abandoned studying ( I'm always with the guitar, but for studyin I mean spending 3 - 4 hours doing exercises with metronome ) and everytime I want to start again I find it more difficult. Today I was patiently starting from very slow to re-build some confidence...

Having this be the biggest struggle in my guitar playing wanted to get your input. I usually pick with my wrist; however for anything over say 150 bpm 16th notes I end up using an arm / wrist combination. I'm never tense when I do it, and i have really good control with it. However for the...

So, I've been goofing around with that DADABC# tuning some more, and have put together a full length (unless I add more  ) song demo which has turned out kind of prog-rock-ish, complete with wanky, over-the-top outro  This will be getting vocals and maybe some more layers eventually...

So, in rediscovering my love of The Tea Party, I've started playing around with alternate tunings again, and am coming up with some stuff I rather like. Here's a clip of something that came to me tonight, tuning is DADABC# http://soundcloud.com/aaronvsmusic/dadabcdemo

Hey everybody, I was asked to do an alternate picking overview on another site, so I figured some of you might be interested in it as well :metal: So a little while ago I offered to do a thread on alternate picking, and the more I started thinking about it, the more I realized that there is a...

Anyone use one of these? Peterson VS-R StroboRack | Sweetwater.com I see that it has DADGAD programmed into it, and the option of quickly bringing up other altered/oddball/distressed_romeo tunings is pretty damn tempting. Plus, I can make it say "SELL ME YOUR STRAT DREW", apparently...

Ok, so as I've mentioned, I'm trying to re-learn how to pick. I've had inefficient technique pretty much my whole life - when I first started, I held a pick with three fingers, sort of a triangular grip between my thumb, pointer, and middle fingers. In college, I realized almost no one did it...
