Just curious about noise gates. Exactly what purpose do they serve? Are they mainly used when playing gigs (live)? When I'm practicing at home I notice a lot of hiss type sound coming through my amp. Would a noise gate stop that? Any info would be appreciated.

Is the ISP Decimator the only one worth while or are there others just as good. I hear a lot of bad stuff about the Boss Noise Gate and some people like their Noise Suppressor, MXR has a bunch as well but I'm not keen on the differences between them and also my signal chain is as follows...
