Acoustic Cover Gig Advice

5871 Views 49 Replies 12 Participants Last post by  eleven59
So, my buddy and I are working up a song list to try getting some acoustic cover gigs a shot. Basically, trying to get gigs at local bars/pubs, mainly college crowd, me on my 12-string acoustic and singing, him on djembe/some backing vocals, we may add acoustic bass or second guitar if one/both of our other buddies want in on it lol Mostly looking to have fun, maybe make a little cash. The kind of stuff we're thinking of is 90s and newer rock, maybe the occasional classic rock/pop song, stuff college kids today will know and sing along with while drunk. We've got a list of about 27 songs right now (not sure how many minutes it works out to). Where I need advice:

-How many songs should we have learned before we start looking for gigs?
-Do you recommend recording a few songs and throwing up a myspace to help with gig-finding?
-Any song suggestions?

- I'd say at least 30-40
- Yes, easy way for people to check you out.
- anything from Ki.

Gigging is phun!
Haha, I'd love to do Devin Townsend covers, but I'm not sure blank stares are what we're looking for in a reaction
More Than Words!

Ok, so that's one I wanna do.

You sing?

I thought of "More Than Words", would be fun, but I'm not sure my buddy can pull off the harmonies well enough to make it worth it, and fingerpicking on 12-string sucks

Re: singing - Check my signature
ok, Ki was a bad idea. You should still do Coast.
That joshua kadison song will work well too. ya know, the song about that girl that keeps running off whoring around and then comes back to sell him another lie?
stupid fecker...
-Santeria
-Two Princes
-Closer
-Say It Ain't So
-It's the End of the World As We Know it (if you can sing that fast)
-Lightning Crashes
-Everything You Want
-It's All Been Done
-Semi-Charmed Life
-Time Of Your Life
-Paralyzer
-Plush
-Don't Speak
-Dammit
-Come Out And Play (Keep 'Em Separated)
-Self Esteem
-Wonderwall of Broken Dreams (mashup of Wonderwall & Boulevard of Broken Dreams)

We sang these around campfires, in hotels, and on the bus with a cheapo classical guitar while in Israel. Tons of fun!

Santeria and Say It Ain't So are already on our list, as is Wonderwall, but I like the mashup idea, and there's some excellent songs I hadn't thought of yet in that list. Thanks :yesway:
The chords in "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" are the same intervals apart as Wonderwall and the tempos are similar, so you can very easily mash them up.

Yeah, I think I've heard it done (an actual mashup of the recordings) but had forgotten until you pointed it out  There's a few other songs that fit too, maybe we'll turn it into a medley

We'd alternate verses from different songs with the Oasis pre-chorus, and do the Green Day "Aaah ahh" bits between verses. People got a kick out of it, definitely.

It's too bad we live in totally different cities, seems like it'd be a blast to start a band

Tonic - If You Could Only See
Filter - Shimmer
Superman's Dead - Our Lady Peace
Selling The Drama - Live
anything from Days of the New
Every Rose Has Its Thorn - Poison

and the best acoustic song,

Wanted - Bon Jovi

if the audience doesn't know that one, I'd be surprised. I have seen coffee shops get really loud when people play that one.

Some great choices there, I was already considering "Wanted..." because I'm playing a 12-string

 That would be hilarious

Bon Jovi has no song called "Wanted." It's "Wanted DEAD OR ALIVE." I know, because #1 I fucking do that song, and I do it extremely well, every part, solo, everything. And #2, I FUCKING LOVE THAT SONG! :scream:

I also quite like that song, and have known how to play it for years  Been a while since I've tried the solo.
No wonder I didn't know those songs. Fucking goddamn pussy music. Thanks, though.

Play some Slayer and Dio, and be done with it, Aaron. :D
I can sing the fuck out of Bon Jovi, BTW. I'm proud to admit. I love me some goddamn Bon Jovi. (At least the old shit. The new shit ain't worth a horse's ass.)
