Down to the actual studio aspect of it - This is the first time I've used an all-SM57 set up, Flemming Rasmusson style. Two on the snare (top/bottom), and one on every tom. It's probably the happiest I've ever been with a raw drum sound, especially toms.
For kick it was a Beta 52, Rhode NT5 on overheads, PG81's on hi hat and ride. Superfly!
Well, it's just one of those things you don't think about trying, because it seems a little "safe", you know? Like, you have all these other mics at your disposal, why bother with something so tried-and-tested. But it's a lesson learned for sure.
