I just found my senior project I did with my first band for my "Music Technology" class about three years ago. Unfortunately, it was "write a song by committee" and the song was already written, so the committee decided to slow it down, change the bridge and ending, and took a bunch of the layering out of it. Within those constraints though I think it came out pretty well!

I also was basically teaching myself (the class was pretty much just "here's the gear, go to town.")

Drums were an electronic kit, guitars and bass were POD, cello was poorly mic'd with a small condenser, and vox used a Rode NT1 which sounded great!

If I were to do it now, I would totally have double-tracked the cello on the main riff and during the verses, re-done the bass tracks and drums (more than one fill is needed :lol, and made the outro more interesting.

Levels could probably have used some tweaking too... vocals are loud and cello is a little low in the mix.

Man, I miss this band though.

I was really impressed with that NT1 on vocals in general. I worked in a couple other people's "song groups" and that was pretty much the go-to vocal mic, although there wasn't much more choice (a set of Audix condensers of some sort, a few SM57s and 58s, and a drum mic kit was the extent beyond the Rodes.)
