Just out. Huge fan of this band along with Vintersorg. One of the best albums out this year. They always do beautiful stuff, but they keep getting more adept.

Have to give this a listen. Borknagar is truly epic stuff. :metal:
There's for sure some sick stuff. The B3 parts sound fucking amazing. Up North has a lot of Ken Hensley style slamming hardcore UH worship stuff going on, especially in the intro. The "Up North" track is Uriah Heep as fuck all around actually. Beautiful vocals, as always.

"Up North" is a better Uriah Heep organ sound than Uriah Heep has these days actually. Of course Ken Hensley isn't with them anymore. Uriah Heep is still making some sick stuff, but the B3 sound isn't as gnarly as the LiY era. A little too flutey and rounded for me. Great tracks though.

wow they do sound a lot like Uriah Heep. I much preferred the second track to the first to be honest.

They've (mainly Vintersorg, who was in Borknagar forever, but left fairly recently) done some epic Uriah Heep covers. Gamma Ray has done some fun ones like Return to Fantasy, but the Vintersorg is a fucking awesome cover.

The Otyg project, which is also in the same general category of sharing a lot of personal as Vintersorg and Borknagar has some epic covers too. Their folk cover of Holy Diver with the mouth harp is fucking awesome.

Oh, I loved 'Voices' :agreed:
Never paid them attention, will now ;)
Next one, yup, there's seemingly some Heep influence - I sorta grew up with UH - after the 60's, that is..
(can't say I like the 2017 LaY remix, though)

am i crazy here? didn't borknagar used to be black metal?
Yeah, they used to be way grimmer. They are in the same category as Enslaved (or even Bathory for that matter) and stuff like that, that for some reason people still consider them "Progressive Black Metal" even though their later stuff moved pretty far from straight "black metal".

Scandinavian Black (and even Death Metal) don't believe in starting new bands for drastic sound changes. You'd have a hard time finding a single scandinavian metal band that sounds remotely close to their first albums from the 90s. The amount of bands who have a first album or two that is a completely different style than their later stuff is way too many to list. Ulver, Therion, Amorphis, Sentenced, Enslaved, Beherit, etc. etc. etc.

I just discovered this band, and this song and It's been on near constant rotation for the last 5 days. Not sure what it is but this song just does it for me.

This one is a bit heavier:

Yeah, they are all sick cuts. "Up North" is the best song I've heard released this year though, tied with Misery Index's "New Salem".

I didn't know ICS Vortex could yodel. The quasi-yodeling parts on "Up North" are so ballsy. At first I was like, "Why would anybody do do that kind of vocal phrasing? Sounds cool though.". But the parts like 25 seconds where is doing the weird ass combination of yodeling and Michael Jackson's hiccup technique are so good.

Freshest shit I've heard in a long time. Even if the music itself wasn't the freshest stuff, which definitely isn't the case, the vocal stuff he is doing at like 25 and 37 seconds is so fun and unique. Such a sick vocalist.
