Eh, the people who say things like "I can't believe how far society has fallen, how could people believe something that is obvious bullshit? Do we live in some bizarre alternate universe all the sudden?" aren't much smarter than the suckers falling for the conspiracy theories.

Organized religion is just conspiracy theories with slightly higher production values and a veneer of respectability.

There is, entirely unsurprisingly, a fucking massive correlation between people inclined to believe conspiracy theories and people who subscribe to organized religion. Since they are exactly the same thing, claiming an idea that is obvious bullshit is true even though you have no proof that is the case. It's not just Christianity either. Islamic ayatollahs, buddhists, "thor is like my dad" pagans, communist state neo-religions in places like China, etc. etc.

People will believe anything as long as there is something in it for them. If you believe that you are gods chosen people, and everyone else isn't, 5g controlling minds is actually a step up. That's an improvement.

It's not a new thing at all. In the US you can't call people who think Dinosaurs didn't exist fucking idiots, because government is full of evangelical christians and people willing to bend over backwards to appease them. It's considered a "difference of opinion, because both are equally valid beliefs.". Conspiracy Theories, for all intents and purposes, have always had massive power and have been outright protected by people in power from being correctly pointed out as basically being lies. To the extent that you aren't allowed to call them conspiracy theories.

Genteel older moderate democrats saying stuff like, "These are good people! These are my neighbors! I can't believe how far these god fearing bible readers have fallen, believing such obvious untruths. How can they believe a conspiracy theory with such fanatical fervor?" need to repeat that sentence back to look in the mirror and repeat that sentence back to themselves slowly until they realize that that last bit is definitely rhetorical question. Every religion ever started as a fucking laughably stupid Conspiracy Theory.

For all its many, many, many idiotic qualities QAnon and all the Bill Gates 5g shit is actually quite a bit more believable than the idea that if you act like a miserable cunt you will be rewarded with entry in heaven. All of the religious prophets were the Alex Jones of their day. The idea that there were once standards about something having to be true before people would believe it is just a comforting myth.

That's why I'm still on good terms with all my conspiracy theorist friends. Some people disown their anti vax pals, but when you think about it, it's a massive double standard. I don't disown my religious friends. Telling the people who think flouride is in the water to fuck off and then grandfather clause'ing the people who find the phrase "that's a minor infraction that will result in an eternity burning in hell" entirely plausible is just hugely hypocritical, I am not going to excuse that away just because it's slightly older.

It's definitely a mistake to think conspiracy theorists deserve less respect than members of organized religion. That's why they will always have power. You can't get rid of all the conspiracy theories, there are too many that are entrenched and protected that you aren't even allowed to correctly acknowledge as Conspiracy Theories. Conspiracy theories are just religion for underground hipsters with a DIY attitude.
