I have to say, i do like the look of soapbar EMGs. They look more modern to me. Traditional humbuckers with the tabs were designed to fit under trim rings, and i think direct-mounting generally looks better, except on guitars like PRSes and LPs where cream rings make for a nice contrast element.
However, they DO make things a pain in the ass for replacement. I'd rather see other pickup manufacturers do something more contemporary, like Lace does with their Alumitones.
