Why don't I have iostat and memstat? Why did I have to hunt down the "optional" sysstat RPM in order to get them? Every UNIX machine has these tools, what the fuck is your problem? You gonna take ifconfig and netstat next? :noway:

Before we get into the distro flame war, know that I'm forced to support RedHat Enterprise at work. :(

The problem with redhat is that EL requires a subscription for updates, so if you run a server class platform, congrats, Linux is no longer free.

btw you might be able to get away with installing apt and installing your utils from there, if you can hook up to the right repository.

I have a subscription, since my company is paying for the licenses. They came with our servers. I also have contention with the fact that we're paying for something that should be free.

I was able to grab it with up2date, but my point is that I shouldn't have to. Every other distro I've used installs the sys stat tools by default. RedHat consistently shows itself to be one of the more inferior distros. :noway:

install debian :agreed:

I used Fedora in my 2 linux classes and it was alright, I don't like where it puts configuration utilities and configuration files but it was alright. I would never use it for my personal system though, yum is slow as balls.

I'm installing debian on the itanic as we speak :yesway:

Balls to RedHat and it's fucking package manager, and it's apparent lack of basic GNU tools

What's with that, anyway? Why do I have to cherry pick so many packages, just to compile stuff? Why doesn't all the GNU shit come in the "development" install? :wallbash:
