Intonation sharp after only 4-5 days? (on a friends Warmoth strat)

3401 Views 31 Replies 14 Participants Last post by  Dominic
I screwed together that black/mirror Warmoth strat for a friend a week ago...
Tomorrow he's going to record some stuff, so he came by so I could check the guitar until tomorrow...

First off, the strings was really yucky, lots of goo on the... After only 4 days

And intonation was off. Like WAY off. 12th fret was SUPER sharp. Almost up a half note!!! :ugh:

I have to sleep, but I'm restringing it tomrrow before he records.

Is there any solution to this? Because it feels like this can be a returning issue... :ugh:

I think he drinks a lot of coffee.

Does this affect?

I have another friend who drinks a lot of coffee, and he also makes a mess on guitars.

I have never drinked coffee, and my strings keep clean for weeks, or even months!
I have never drinked coffee
Well, it's high time you start. A few suggestions:

  • Turn your camera on
  • Have a triple espresso on the rocks
  • Wait about 15 minutes
  • Pull out random guitars and play them and tell us about them
  • Order a Warmoth
  • Repeat

Is there any chance at all that this one was hit with any sort of hammer, or blunt instrument/tool? This is the one that was scratched up, right?
Trem springs stretched?

The Floyd is not floating. It's blocked to dive-only. Doesn't move backwards

Does it have a trem? Wobbly posts maybe?
Definitely not wobbly posts. I have never failed installing a Gotoh Floyd. Also, it's blocked to dive-only.
Have the saddles slipped forward?
thats really the only logical explanation for an intonation change.

And the only logical fix is super glue it in place.
You guys were WREONG :fawk: why would Floyd saddles move if seated properly
I changed strings and GUESS WHAT; strings are in perfect intonation again.

Also had to remove some gunk on the fretboard...
Seriously, these strings was not only gunky, but RUSTY, after 4-5 days of playing...

Solutions?

1. Get some kind of coated strings
2. Wash his hands and dry properly before playing
3. Wipe off strings after playing
?. Stop drinking coffee (maybe?)

But I dont want to recommend the Elixier, because they sounds like ass. Sounds like tone knob is rolled down a bit.

Also read here:

"In general, the current standard diet is primarily composed of acidic or acidifying elements (proteins, cereals, sugars). Alkaline foods such as vegetables are eaten in much smaller quantities; their alkaline content is insufficient to neutralize surplus acids.
Stimulants like tobacco, coffee, tea and alcohol are also extremely acidifying"

He eats candy, drinks alcohol, I think he smokes, and I know he drinks a lot of coffee.

I stopped alcohol years back, I dont smoke or drink coffee, I rarely eat candy or anything... I'm vegetarian too so I get a lot of vegetables. And I can use my strings for 4-5 weeks without and issues, no gunk, no intonation problems, etc etc.

I notice a relation between coffee and string wear.

I feel like Rob Reiner now

Another epic thread... Pseudoscience at its best, did you check whether the strawberry moon had any influence too?

1. I built the guitar, it intonated perfectly. The guy picks it up.
2. He comes with about 4 days later because we're supposed to record the day after. Strings are DISGUSTING and RUSTY. Intonates like ass. Sharp ass.
3. I put new strings on, and the strings are back to perfect intonation again.

How much do somebody wanna bet on the strings being disgusting and shit-intonated in a few another days?
I'm up for $50. The guitar stays intonated perfectly, you will recieve $50 from me on Paypal.
If the intonation is SHARP, I wanna have $50.

I can film how it intonates before he comes and starts recording, and then I can film when he comes back a few days later to record another song or two.

I can afford it, and I am fucking ready to prove you guys wrong. :fawk:

So, who's up for betting!?!??! :flex:

Coffee affecting intonation? Well, points for creativity, that's for sure.
So, what you're saying is that the guy played the shit out of the guitar for a couple days, tossed it into a fjord overnight, then brought it back?

It affects my intonation... I'm usually a lot sharper after a few cups, especially in the morning!

Also Rocka, dont drink coffee, please...
I dont think any of us where aware our suggestions where a test??
Caffeine is not the issue... it's the acid in brewed coffee. If you drink more than 3 cups per day (obviously depending upon size of cup,) studies show that it increases the acidic qualities in your perspiration and in the oil produced by your skin.

Certain types of metal will react quickly to that acid. I can't say whether the particular strings he's using are susceptible to this sort of corrosion, but I can say that if you work in an industry that deals with manufacturing fasteners, and you are one of those people who sweat a lot, they'll ask you to refrain from drinking coffee or acidic drinks until after work and cease doing so within 5 hours of your next shift.

It's possible that your friend is just one of these people.
Okay, whoever wanna bet on the intonation can just bet now! Because there's already an answer!

I WON

The intonation was perfect when I changed strings this morning.

Then came the guy and started recording. Nothing weird in the beginning... But after the third song; I checked intonation; and the intonation was already getting slightly sharp! And the strings was super yucky, even tho I told him to wash his hands before starting.

I asked how much coffee he drinks and he looked a bit caught, but he said "not very much"... But I remember last time he came by my house, he had coffee cup with him! The other guy in the band who joined also drinking coffee, maybe it's a social thing, I dont know... I dont drink coffee

I cannot know either, this is just my speculations.

I dont wanna put him through a laboratory experiment just to see how coffee affects his sweat/skin oil, but it's certainly interesting that some people makes this mess.

The other guitarist in Rocka Rollas doesn't drink much coffee, and he just like me, have very clean guitars.

Three other guys I know who drinks coffee makes a mess too.

BUT HERE'S THE WEIRD PART!!!
Another guy I know doesn't drink cofee, but his strings are ALWAYS the most disgusting you can imagine.
Everything he looks at gets dirty
