Man, i'm listening to the song the 5th time already...it is indeed the very win i expected it to be!

Its one of the easy-listening ones, i'm sure the majority of the album will be more on the proggier side. But this one is just so "in my ear", 100% top notch summer- and feelgood music. Maiden > everything else. Bow down to their awesomeness!

The new record is great. It didnt leave my CD-player since Friday (as we are lucky ones and have "Friday" as official day for new releases instead of Mondeay like the rest of the world :D ) , and it really grows with every day. Nothing for easy side-listening, this one needs some time and attention!

Oh, and the concert in Norway was simply amaing...review and pics following later that week.

Don't think the band has quite topped themselves since Powerslave. At least back then, they were putting together songs that seemed well structured.
I dont think that anyone in his 50s is able to write the same songs (or songs in the same vein) as he did with 25. Someone recently said - "Multimillionaires in their fifties growing up with 70s Prog and Deep Purple" - and that NAILS it.

I'm pretty much what you'd call a "fanboy" when its up to Iron Maiden, but putting the pink glasses down for a moment - dont think that Powerslave or SSOASS would sound like they if someone else than Martin Birch would have produced this records. He was called a "band member" back then for a damn good reason.

Kevin Shirley is...well...i'm in a loss for words, i somehow apprecciate how "passive" he is as a producer, and i kinda dig the whole live-sounding/recorded in live-situation thing - still he fucked it up too much on some parts, where it gets to muddy, and some really great harmonies get totally lost in the mix if you dont listen to the record on total high-end equipment (already the difference between my car-stereo and the more expensive equipment in my living room make a HELL of a difference....for example this is why - when we record - always listen to the mixes and masterings in my car only, because it needs to sound good on THAT one...its easy for a record to sound good on high end stereos).

Anyway, what i wanted to say is: from what i've read, Birch seemed to be a kinda radical producer, like "do that again, play it different, sing higher/lower, cut 2 minutes down, repeat only 2 times, not 4 times" - Shirley seems to be the "do what you want, i'll push the "rec" button...". and you hear that.

That said - i dont think there is a song on the new record that is not well structured....but i can see why someone may get that opinion. FWIW: People and mags said that about Powerslave, S.I.T., and Seventh Son also back then. They also called Piece Of Mind a big letdown, preaching about how Maidens carreer obviously ended with Number Of The Beast. Years later, we knwo that they just were way ahead of their time.

I think that both Number of the Beast and (particularly) Piece of Mind sound fantastic. In fact, Piece of Mind is still a reference point for me as to how a metal album should sound. Seems like their studio sound got a little thinner after that.
For me - especcially the guitar sound of the first lead harmony in "Flight Of Icarus" was always a reference of my "dream"-guitar sound!
