Howdy folks. I have been a fates warning fan for years and years, since i was a kid really(my old man got me into Images and Words in 92' and have loved prog ever since.). I really dug the first 3 albums with John Arch and then he fell off the map.

Looking around a while back I found that he did a 2003 release with Jim Matheos and Mike Portnoy called A Twist of Fate. I'v never heard of it, but FUCK can that guy still sing. I get chills listening to this guy, and I dont like 99% of vocalists out there. Its pretty much Maynard and early Phil Anselmo are my fav's, but damn John Arch owns. I wish so much he would have gotten the Dream Theater gig. He sounds like LaBrie, but like 10 times better.

I couldnt find any tube vids except this one of Portnoy playing at a clinic to part of one of the tracks.

I actually like Ray Alder's voice a little better, but that could be partly because my first exposure to FW was with No Exit. I'd heard of them before that but never checked them out.

Arch has a great voice, to be sure.
I think he(Arch) was good in his early days, but i agree that Alder is a bit better, but I was blown away by how good Arch sounded on the 2003 album. Better than in his young days.
A Twist of Fate was my favorite release of 2003. It's only 2 songs, but > 20 min long. It has Portoy's best playing on it, and some of Kevin Moore's best keys.

It gets regular play here.

For me Fates' with Arch > Fates' with Ray, but that's just because I like the songs, not the quality of the singer. I think Ray is fantastic with Redemption (though I am biased).
Twist of Fate is a great disc. I wish he'd do more, but its probably unlikely. I got my start on early fates warning (Spectre within), and Ray just didnt do it for me. then by the time fates hit their early 90s stuff, i just really cant listen to it at all. and then they get boring after that. IMO, anyway.

Suckup.
'Twist Of Fate' was a pretty cool album, but I firmly agree with the Alder > Arch camp. Alder's just got more power and foundation to his voice, Arch has that "great voice being squeezed through too small of a hole" thing going on.
I havent spun this in quite sometime. But I remember there being quite a few good moments on the CD. I'm going to have to dig this one up again.

Somewhat unknown tidbits about the project: It originated from Matheos asking Arch to do a guest appearance on what would become the first OSI album. There's also a press kit included on the slipcase version of the CD.
It was great that John got back together with Matheos and did Twist Of Fate as it’s a great CD. It sort of gave me an idea what Fates Warning may have sounded like if John had stayed with the band.
For me it’s hard to compare the John era vs. the Ray era of FW. They basically changed direction musically the second John left the band. I think Ray made them a bit more mainstream, but also fit their more progressive trends quite well. I still think Perfect Symmetry is their best album and I can’t really imagine John singing on that one.
