Jupiter cloud belt missing again, scientists say - CNN.com

This is what makes observing Jupiter so awesome. Sure this an extreme example, but Jupiter can change a lot from night to night and sometimes from hour to hour. Jupiter and its moons, especially the Galilean satellites, are just amazing to study and observe.

Whoa, isn't that the band that the great red spot is a part of? I want to see what effect it had on the spot.

Yeah, the storms and clouds on Jupiter last WAYYYYY longer than they do on Earth. Sometimes for hundreds of years. But they aren't permanent like a lot of "average Joes" think. There have been so many cool changes to Jupiter that it's just fascinating to watch. :agreed:

Coriolis forces are a substantial part of creating the banding. Same here on good ol' Terra - tropical easterlies, temperate westerlies, polar easterlies, etc.

They think this could be a high atmospheric level (but relatively thin) ammonia cloud, covering the SEB.
