So on my "To buy" list recently I have

-A case for my 89 Soloist (its been in a gigbag since I got it :noway:)
-Two singlecoils for said Soloist
-An El Cheapo Guitar to attempt a refret on

Saw this on ebay

Jackson Dinky DiMarzio Tone Zone and Seymour Duncan | eBay

and figured that checking off all 3 for under $200 was a nice bonus. So I've got two questions.

-Anyone know what variety of lower end 90s dinky this is? The reverse inlays and three pot config don't appear to match anything on my cursory scan of my jackson catalogs. I'm figuring that its a mutt and the middle pot installation might be a mod. Unusually nice figuring for a low end Jackson.
-What do you guys think of SD hot rails?

Nice score! That's actually a pretty nice-looking little guitar considering it's a lower-end model. Could be a fun beater/project axe. You could use it as a pickup test mule.

It has the considerably riskier assignment of "fret work test mule". Now to go and drop $200 on the Stew-Mac fretwork Kit :woohoo: . I figure once I take into account the worth of the case and pickups used I got the guitar for like $60, considering the rank pawn shop shit I could have got at that price point I think it turned out to be a good deal. I would have prefered something non CR for a first try at a refret but at the price I was budgeting for a practice refret axe I couldn't have gotten anything better.
You should do something funky and cheap with it like put in some GFS lipstick tubes.

I was thinking more along the lines of a cheap midi pickup or something. We shall see though.
Well I thought there was a cheap midi humbucker on the market. Apparently not though. Anybody know of one?
I would highly recommend getting jumbo frets to do the refret with because if you mess up the first time you can always do it over to get med-jumbo or god forbid low-wides
I would never even consider anything non jumbo. But yeah noted. Some friends managed to talk sense into me from my original stance of "I'm gonna do a first refret on one of my soloists"
This makes my GAS for an SLSMG grow even more

SLSMGs are great :yesway:, this guitar is nothing like one. There was an EDS one on ebay with legit EMGs for $450 last week. Almost pulled the trigger on that one, I don't know if it sold, the guy might relist.
I don't recognize that one. The reverse sharkies are unusual on that era of import Jackson, especially since it doesn't have a reverse headstock. Other than that, it looks like an early DK2.

Good luck on the fretwork. I've been wanting to learn how to do my own fretwork for years, but I'm not sure I'm patient enough for it.

I know just when I think Jackson, I think SLSMG!

Yeah I figured that since I like buying older guitars its a worthwhile skill to learn. Especially considering the fact that I don't live near any good techs. If you get good at it it should be cheaper in the long run. No idea if I'll get good at it though.

What I'm really looking to buy this summer Jackson wise is a US Exotic Dinky. :jj: One was on JCAF earlier this year for ~$1.2k but I'm betting with the current Jackson market one on ebay would go for less. They don't pop up too often though, do they?
Also, how shitty is the trem on this? Not that I'm terribly interested in actually playing the guitar.

No such thing exists.

I thought there was a $100 Humbucker I saw a while ago, but looks like I was wrong.

At first when the guy in the listing said "lacewood" I thought he didn't know what he was talking about but apparently there was a "36th Anniversary Guitar Center Model" that was Lacewood. Limited to 200 units or some shit. I'll be damned.

Here are some links I found on it.

I'm betting the seller was mis-representing the stock Duncan Designed Hotrails these JCAF guys are mentioning as "Seymour Duncan Hot Rails". Guess I'll have to see how it is when it gets here. Apparently the seller is a shitty communicator and pretty slow shipper.

Jackson DKGC36

There is what it looks like stock. Damn I'm a sucker for lacewood. :jj: Middle pot was obviously added.

Bridge is apparently a JT-580 Takeuchi. As far as licensed floyds go those aren't that bad. But thats not really a compliment. I'll have to shove a block of wood in there. If its a good sounding body I might have to pick up a nicer neck and get a real trem for it. I  lacewood.

Awesome score. That body looks rad.

I personally don't like the hotrails pickups. I had them in an SL3 before, but I think it was just a dud guitar. It didn't sound good with any pickups I tried with it. I still haven't like Hotrails in any other guitar I've tried.

Also, if you have no plans for that Tone Zone, and want to get rid of it, send me a PM.
