Made a flat wound string video (Axe-FX, Gibson Les Paul content)

I was in a guitar store today buying strings for my seven-strings when I saw a pair of D'Addario XL Chromes which are what I always used to use like about ten years ago or so (specifically 13-56 gauges). I never really get a chance to play those kinda strings nowadays, so I bought a pair, strung them up on my Gibson Les Paul, and just played some random shit through my Axe-FX Ultra.

I really love how warm and smooth the tone on these things is. :agreed:

The distorted lead tone in the middle is particularly smoooooooooth.

They do sound nice, nice playing too btw :yesway:

I've been meaning to try out some flats for ages now. Do you find that the Chromes peel or go flaky after a while? I seem to remember someone saying that ages ago... It's quite possible they were talking about different strings entirely though, I forget!
Nah. I've been a big fan of D'Addarios for a while now. The XL Nickel Wound regular light 7-strings are the ones I've been using on my sevens for years and years (10-13-17-26-36-46-59) after trying out pretty much every seven string set sold in stores in Tokyo. A long time ago when I used flat wounds ALL the time (even back when my main guitar was an Epiphone), D'Addario Chromes were the nicest sounding of the ones I used. They never peel or feel flaky, but they do get more and more mellow as time goes on - which is something you wouldn't want for metal or rock strings, but is definitely something you want for jazz strings.

Probably the thing that people who have never played flatwounds will need to get used to is how difficult they are to bend (which has more to do with the super heavy gauge than with them being flat instead of round).

My thoughts exactly. I knew a girl that used to use them on her 7620. Whenever I played her guitar, I was always taken aback by how smooth feeling the strings were.

The thing I did not like however was how dull and blurry the tone was for metal  The quickness of the string lended well to quicker clean techniques and fat, round clean sounds.
I've got Chrome 11's on my tele. I use that guitar when I work on the Micky Baker and Jody Fisher books. They ARE the jazz sound to me. I like dark...not a blanket thrown over the tone...but dark.
Naren, have the Japenese not invented furniture? Just wondering...

Never really cared for the flatwound jazz sound myself - I tend to like a bit more growl and grit to my tone. Cool, though, this is probaby the first AxeFX demo with flatwounds on it.

Not everybody has spare Rectoverbs to use as furniture!
I used to use them on the bass for a long time (Steve Harris worship!). The feel is lovely. Not so big on the tone though.
They need to invent rack cases, that Axe-Fx has been sitting there for too long.

Smooth stuff sir. :yesway:
That was pretty cool. I see D'Addario has Half-Round strings with apparently feel a lot like flat wound strings but sound brighter like round wound strings.

If they hadn't invented furniture, then you'd have to wonder how I got my couch, four chairs, and all my tables... :ugh:

A rack case would just be a waste of money, because I would have to take it out of the rack case every time I needed it for a show or for practice and then I'd leave my useless rack case at home. :(

If I had a car, I'd probably have bought a rack case, though.

That sounds like something pretty cool to experiment with. :yesway:
Sexy smooth tone is sexy and smooth :yesway:
