So, here we are, week 3 of the mg.org something for everyone challenge. Born out of some people liking doing covers, whilst others like writing songs, with a combination of a few people just not having enough time to do full songs (hence the lead a week). Do one, 2 or all 3. Also, it means I only have to track one of these per week.

The point totals after week 2 are as follows:
Markus: 40
Connor: 30
Iron1: 20
Rev Drucifer: 20
7DT: 20
scole: 20
Randy: 10
T Gobbs: 10
Nick: -1 (for posting a mixtest)
Vince: 10
Mattayus: 10

Rules are simple, do 1-3 things every week, Post your creations in the weekly thread as soundcloud/youtube links. I'm aiming to get various contributions for backing tracks, each one will be credited to the author. As it's the first week I'm doing a dropbox download, but we should get some dedicated hosting or something like that courtesy of chris. If you gave me a backing track, then you get bonus 10 points too, I am instigating that, as work should be rewarded. And points mean prizes (whatever that means)

The deadline for this week is end of play, Sunday 29th March

Short rules:
- You have until sunday midnight/monday morning to post your submission
- Either do an original song, a cover/medley or a lead over the provided backing track per week.
- Submissions must be stuff you've done this week, no matter how awesome an old track/recording is
- 10 points for each submission, per category.
- submissions as souncloud or youtube links. Well, as long as it is playable from a post in the thread really.
- You can do multiple entries per category, but only the first one will score points.
- no eliminations, do your stuff as and when you can
- leads can be layer, melodies, you can chop and rearrange the track, whatever floats your boat really
- Don't be a dick to other people. You can go to ss.org for that.
- Don't steal other peoples songs
- Don't steal backing tracks or pass it off as your own, give credit where it's due if you want to share your awesome yngwie malmsteen unleash the fjokking fjury face melting solo.

LAW Track:

This weeks backing track is courtesy of this forums groove as fuck metal maestro Mayttayus. Key unkown, tempo is 95bpm. Many thanks to Mattayus for contributing this awesome bit of stomp! :

Have fun peoples!

That was an idea that never made it into my thrash band, so it'll be in Eb. Key starts in Fm then moves to Ebm IIRC.

Good stuff. If I could actually play a lead I'd be all over that.

I’m taking off from work a bit early today as I’ve been cooped up in my office all week and I’m going stir crazy. I don’t mean to sound like I’m complaining to be at work as I know people are stuck doing the same thing in their homes without pay right now, but it’s also a bit of a burden to have to expose myself daily when I can do 98% of my job from home...while playing my guitar.

Had some really cool inspiration when I started this one, then the week sucked the life outta me, hence the title...

Did a partial LAW, as I warned of last week  Would rather stick with doing a finite section I feel like I can "write" something for as opposed to a minute and a half of noodling. Matt also made it especially hard with all those damn chord changes

One take. Right before the sweeps sounds choppy like a punch because I couldn't get a uniform resolve before that, so i just paused. Panning and volume done in post obv. EDIT: Feedback is an Ebow in 'harmonic mode'

Hard to be inspired every week. There's definitely some nice ideas there anyway, almost death-doom like.

The ebow stuff is really cool, I've been considering a sustainer/sustainiac to be able to do those.

I'm working on more doom - trying to do some vocals as well, but writing lyrics isn't really my thing.

Thanks. I bought the ebow to go with the fretless build I posted some time ago (haven't done much with it though). Most of the ebow work is inspired by Fountainhead but this particular track was kinda inspired by the solo from 'Motherload' by Mastodon.

Inability to write lyrics was actually one of the main hurdles I had in songwriting. There was a thread I posted on here that was very therapeutic and opening myself up to lyric writing went a long way toward unsticking my music writing overall. I find that the same internal critic that is overly critical of lyrics is the same internal critic that slows the songwriting process. Food for thought.

I've got a mountain of ideas over the last few years and even made some progress on recording them (2 to 3 albums worth!) I just moved in the last year and haven't had an adequate recording station since then. Would like to contribute some full songs or pieces if I can resolve my workflow.

I'm actually pretty stoked with my submission this week. I sat in my studio earlier this week and for the first time in a while, enjoyed a little herbal recreation. Opened up Logic, started noodling and within about an hour had a good amount of the riffs in this song gathered. I organized those into the first half and for the second half I wanted to 'write' it by improvising the guitar track and then writing the drums to it after. It's a bit long, but I've already written vocal melodies for the entire second half, including the whole start/stop section. After I cleaned up my studio a couple weeks ago, I've got the Korg TR-1 rack ready to go all the time, it's got some of the base sounds that Derek Sherinian used on Falling Into Infinity and those are my favorite keyboard sounds of all time. A lot of the drums were programmed at work in my office because this one was definitely an undertaking. The only shite part of it all is that I didn't check my guitar tuning enough and as the song goes on, you can hear some slight chorusing from the strings being a couple cents off from each other. Especially when the synth is playing under them. The intro is a double tracked 12 string with a shitload of compression and EQ (the raw tracks sound like SHIT). I used an actual amp for the first harmony guitars you hear in the beginning because I really wanted it to start with that feedback and wasn't getting it to kick in right away with the AxeFX. Lots of synth shit from Alchemy in the intro. When I started recording music on my own, this is the EXACT idea I had in mind for what I wanted to write.

Off to go listen to this week's submissions then I'm gonna fuck around with the LOTW!

Nice one, Rev, my favorite of yours this season. That intro is awesome and the guitars sound great (again), those chugs at the end are devastating.

I started off the week highly motivated but pulled a muscle in my mid back and it made playing guitar for any real length of time nigh impossible so this came out pretty rough/short. I'd intended to LAW again this week but oh well

Your tones remind me of a giant, rusty pipe with many sharp corroded pieces missing that's used to beat people with. I mean that in a good way. The lack of inspiration I think lent itself to the song, the feeling of emptiness was present, but not in a negative way.

Definitely a cool approach, I wasn't expecting with the Ebow! I dug the pacing leading up to the sweeps at the end instead of busting a nut at the start.

Here's mine. Didn't come up with any good vocal melodies, but might try again at some later point,

Man, this one has a feeling of despair in it like Iron1's. In our current global situation, it's so fitting and for me, represents that actual feeling of the world without the hyper-paced media aspect of it. Really dug the way it slowly built up as it went along.

I see Connor posted his, so now I'm off to listen to that and surely feel bad about myself like I usually do when I listen to his submissions.

I fucking love the sounds you throw into your songs, man. You really blend shit together perfectly and all the glitch/stutter stuff is killer. I'm not into most of what I hear with the modern guys doing that kind of thing, but I love everything you've posted. I meant to bring this up last week and this week's song didn't feature it as much as your last two, but CkY could totally get Chris to stop singing and have you join, you can nail Devon's laid back vocals!

Oh yeah, the chugs at the end of mine, those 808's really lend themselves to that section! It might be passe' these days, but IDGAF, I love em.
