He was so on top of his game just before he died. I remember hearing the news of the helicopter crash. I was driving to work, and it felt like somebody kicked me in the stomach.

Hell, this was '83, when he was young and hungry. I love how he evolved from this into a more mature voice, without losing any of the fire in his playing. So many players were unable to make that transition successfully. I still miss him terribly.

I thought he had for a while - the drugs were fucking with him pretty badly, and cleaning up made him lose his focus for a bit - but he seemed to be rediscovering music with a clear head for the first time right when he died. :/

It's an absolute tragedy he died when he did - finally, for the first time in his professional career he had his life under control, and then he died in a freak accident.
