Here's my approach to writing guitars solos. Once I have the backing tracks finished I just improvise repeatedly until I find something that makes me go "ah!!! that was good", then I take that detail and build the rest of the solo around that.
However, I didn't manage to pull off anything worthwhile for 5 minutes straight here, but once I shut the camera off I got some cool ideas.
