Detroit adds another Filppula, Montreal takes forgetting how bad Carey Price is to a new level by trading Halak, and Nashville trades Arnott and Dan Hamhuis in their continued pursuit of the Long-Term Cap Management Cup. What's other hockey news that's fit to print?

You're welcome. :D
Hey, don't forget many people in St-Louis are pissed you guys let go 2 top prospects (one of them beeing a first-round pick) for a goalie that proved to be hot for a single post-season. Nobody knows how Halak will do in the future.... It's not like he's had a couple of great seasons.

Hmm, what?

Carey Price bad? Who said that?
Halak was goin' to leave anyway. Those who thought he was staying in Montreal had their heads burried in the sand.

It has been crystal clear since he's been drafted that Price was going to be the first goaler in Montreal for at least a decade. Price is still considered a top goalie prospect. At the age he's at, first-round-pick (between Crosby and Kopitar) Price has better stats than M-A Fleury did at this age. When Fleury did have that bad 30-something loss season, everybody doubted him. Look where he's at now! When he gets older in between his ears (he's only 22 y.o. and goalies are NHL-ready at an older age), Price will no doubt be way better that Halak, wich is older than him. Just to start with, he's about twice the size Halak is and covers waaaaay more surface than Halak does.

We have young prospects oozing out our ass. more than half our team is kids just going into their 3rd season. Halak is 25, i'm thinking he will jive with the young team and coach. Then we will come to canada and rule all of you, and confiscate the canidian brewerys and pee in the beer.

Gagne trade was terrible. Should've traded Carter for Quick or Bernier. Other than that FLyers have made pretty good moves this offseason.

Still though Walker is unlikey to make the team. So essentially we traded our best left winger for a 4th round draft pick and a veteren health scratch.

The Pens made major moves to sure up their defense which was one of their weak points over the past season. Martin and Zbynek are great additions to the team and they have long term deals.

HOWEVER something nobody is talking about is that while the Pens now have a stronger defense, they are short two top two line wingers in the team lineup. They have four guys left who have shown they are even remotely capable of playing on the top 2 lines with success: obviously Crosby and Malkin, and Kunitz and Dupuis. That leaves 2 spots that will need to be filled by third or fourth line wingers or AHL prospects Connor, Jeffrey, and Tangradi. While all of the AHL guys look like good potentials, none of them have ever played a full NHL season. With the departure of Gonchar and Guerin the Pens also lost two of their top 5 scorers and two guys that were on their top power play unit.

This on a team that had notable trouble scoring goals for long stretches last season. To me it looks like The Pens may have addressed one problem while making another much much worse. Not to mention they're very close to the cap and one of their starting defenseman is another guy that will be playing his first full season in the NHL AND they don't have the luxury of a seventh defenseman that they've had for the last two seasons AND some of the guys they had the luxury of scratching when they weren't needed like Godard, Rupp, and Adams will be required to play every game as the Pens only have 12 forwards under contract (not counting current AHL players). Granted they have about $2.2 million left under the cap, but there's a LOT of need left to try to fill with that amount of money... or a hell of a lot of reliance on AHL prospects :2cents:

I can't believe how good the Pens are every year with their Gm. He seems to make even Clarke seem brilliant.
Well, the organization has been very good with prospects from scouting, and very good at getting skilled players to stay out of loyalty to the organization. Crosby and Malkin could EASILY each be making $10 million someplace else in the NHL. Hell even Ryan Malone who did leave for more money elsewhere has all but come out and said in interviews that he regretted the decision.

For the coming season they may turn out to be fine because honestly the three wings they have coming up from the AHL are all really good players that should perform as well as the wings they've had in the past. Their main problem is likely to be on the power play, as Gonchar was absolutely HUGE to them there, and they also lost Guerin, who while he missed as many pucks as he deflected he was at least in front of the net

I definitely think that eventually Shero's style is going to bite the team in the ass though

IIRC they've only missed the playoffs 4 times since 1989 and have won the cup 3 times in the same timeframe... compared to some teams I'd hardly call that a lot of suck
true, but the only reason they got crosby was from ubersucking one year to get the first round draft pick. (right? didnt they do a lottery one year?)

Well Crosby was after the lockout was he not. They won the lottery to get him

I may be mistaken though
Crosby was actually 2005, the year of the lockout so yeah they won the lottery, but it was heavily weighted in their favor because they had been so bad the previous couple years. Malkin was 2004 and Fleury was 2003. They finished last in the NHL on 2004 and next to last in the Eastern Conference in 2003. I remember 2004 because Olczyk was coach and they only won 1 game out of every 4

bought a new flyers hat today. So stoked for the upcoming season. Going to miss Gags though. If Im not mistaken he was the longest playing player in Philadelphia of all pro teams.
