Nightwish - The Official Website

Another chapter of the Nightwish story has ended today. Nightwish and Anette Olzon have decided to part company, in mutual understanding, for the good of all parties involved.

In recent times it has become increasingly obvious that the direction and the needs of the band were in conflict, and this has led to a division from which we cannot recover.

Nightwish has no intention of cancelling any upcoming shows, and as a result we have decided to bring in a substitute vocalist starting in Seattle 1.10.2012. Her name is Floor Jansen from The Netherlands (ex-After Forever, ReVamp), and she has graciously stepped in to help us complete the Imaginaerum world tour.

We are all strongly committed to this journey, this vehicle of spirit, and we are sure that this will lead to a brighter future for everyone.
We forever remain excited about the adventures to come, and we are extremely proud of the two beautiful albums and the wonderful shows we shared together.

I WANT TO SEE NIGHTWISH WITH FLOOR SINGING

I missed Nightwish in NYC (was sick that week) but damn, I think Floor would be fucking awesome. She has the power that Annette didn't have, and way more versatility than Tarja.

I saw Nightwish in a small club with Annette and it was a really great show, though she was a little inconsistent live (I love her vocals on Dark Passion Play, though). I'm pretty sure Floor will completely wipe the...er...uh...well, do a much better job.

Floor will be great but for some reason Annette had a soft place in my heart. I will miss her :(

Annette had a soft place in my shit. Not to say that I didn't like the 2 albums with her. I just think she is mediocre Pop singer.

Bring back Tarja! yeah like that will ever happen.

This Floor chick looks like she will make a great temp replacement. Fuck I'd prefer her permanently over anyone else I can think of.

Floor Jansen is one of my fav female vocalists ever, so this is great news to me. Her work with Arjen Lucanssen's stuff is fantastic.

Floor is who they should have hired in the first place. She's the best female rock singer in the world right now. The thing that sucks is that this might put off the next ReVamp album for awhile. The first one was excellent. Nightwish are fools if they don't hire Floor permanently. She might want too much writing input, though.

I'll be curious to see what the split was really all about.

Regarding last night's concert...
29.09.2012
We were in hell today. Vocalist in a hospital. Show about to be cancelled... But nobody gave up an inch. With the help from the ladies Elize and Alissa from Kamelot we actually managed to pull of a relaxed and great show! The crowd doing the mass karaoke with the band playing was absolutely amazing. We were humbled and grateful at the same time. This is unity and help from friends and fans. Anette is already recovering thanks to the medical staff and whatever powers there exists. The shows will go on. We give our greatest respect to Alissa, Elize and the crowd in Ogden Theatre, Denver. You rule!!!
That doesn't sound good...:(

Sad to hear this as I really liked Annette.

I just noticed the amazing timeline on this. This has to be one for the record books:

Friday 9/28 -- Anette gets severely sick, goes to the hospital and misses the Denver gig. Band performs a half-assed set without her using Kamelot's backing female vocalists.

Saturday 9/29 -- Anette posts on her blog how unhappy she was that the band went ahead with the Denver gig without asking her. She also mentions that the doctors did a CT scan and found a cyst on her liver.

Sunday 9/30 -- Anette performs with the band in Salt Lake City. She also posts interesting statements like "To think a show is more important than the humans in the band is for me, so totally not in this world" and "[t]omorrow my loved ones arrive and thank God for that!

Today, Monday 10/1 -- The band announces that Anette is out and that Floor is taking her place at the Seattle gig TONIGHT and for the rest of the tour.

I can only conclude that Floor was sitting on standby during the entire tour. There's no way she'd be able to fly halfway around the world and join a tour in progress unless she already was comfortable with the setlist. There must have been some longstanding tension in the band or some health concerns for this to have happened the way it did. Normally, an event like this would result in a tour being cancelled.

Nightwish could make a very successful softcore porn relying solely on their former and current vocal talents.

I saw Nightwish last week with Kamelot. Quick review before I get into the topic at hand:

Kamelot - their sound was horrible. You couldn't hear the singing, you couldn't hear the guitar, you couldn't hear any notes in the guitar solos under the 12th fret on the high E. There was no separation between the instruments for the most part, which was a huge bummer. I'm not terribly familiar with Kamelot but that show, despite the bad sound mixing, made me want to check them out. Elize from Amaranthe was one of the guest singers.

Nightwish - this was the 5th time I've seen Nightwish, and the 4th time I've seen them with Anette. This was the best Nightwish performance I've seen, and one of the top 5 shows I've ever been to. Every thing was absolutely spot on. Anette nailed every note, perfectly, even the high notes toward the end of "Seven Days to the Wolves" ("take the road less traveled by"). Both she and the band were 10/10. The sound was great, the vocals were great, the song selection was great (although they didn't play "Siren," but as much as I love Anette that's one song that I prefer Tarja on). I think Anette is a pretty good singer, the last two albums were good, and she's usually pretty good live, but she was incredible at this performance. I seriously got chills a few times throughout their performance.

Alright, on to the drama. I don't think Nightwish fired her. I'm pretty sure it was her decision to leave:

1) She's 41 and has two kids, the youngest of whom is 2. It probably sucks being on a year long tour and away from your young child (although I think her blog did say that she got a second tour bus and her family was going to come visit her or something, and I think that like just happened two days ago)

2) She got sick and ended up in the hospital with a fever and was vomiting on 9/29. Jukka (drums) was had the flu a few days earlier so maybe she caught it from him.

3) A scan at the hospital revealed a cyst in her liver (which could be nothing or could be serious)

4) According to her blog, she seemed pretty upset that they let the two female singers with Kamelot fill in for her (there are a few vids on YouTube, one of them was holding a piece of paper with the lyrics on it and there were a few errors when she came in a few measures too early or too late). But I really wonder, what was the band going to do? Cancel the show at the last minute when fans had already made plans to be there? I got the impression that they only had a few hours notice.

So I think stress + being sick + feeling "replaceable" caused her to decide to leave the band. I think there may have been some other drama going on, like maybe her personal stuff that was affecting her work with the band, but I really don't think they "fired" her like they did Tarja.

People online also brought up this point: what if it was Tuomas who was sick? Would they have just used someone else on keyboard or would they have canceled the show? Ok maybe Tuomas is the wrong example cuz he knows when to push all his sample buttons on his keyboard, but what about if Emppu was sick? Would they cancel the show or bring in another guitarist? (At one of their shows a few years ago they did let one of their roadies or crew or something play guitar on one of the songs, FWIW)

Now, I also think it's weird that Floor filled in on such short notice. Was she touring with them or something? That's a bit suspicious.

Rumors online suggest that maybe they were going to kick Anette out after this tour (and replace her with Floor?).
