Nintendo 3DS - just wow

I wandered into GameStop today and realized that the 3DS launched this past weekend. I had no intention of buying since the price was so high. Was talking to the guys about it and they had just gotten a demo unit in so I fired it up.

The 3D effect has to be seen to be believed. It's 100% amazing. After just viewing the system menu in 3D I had to have it. I bought Street Fighter as well and it looks freakin' fantastic.

If you're a gamer and haven't checked out the 3DS yet get to your local store and check it out. It's crazy. Youtube has some Resident Evil: Mercenaries videos and while you don't get the 3D effect from Youtube you do get an idea of what the system is capable of.

The 3DS gives me headaches. I always just turned the 3D effect off (an absolute requirement on such a headache-inducing device), but I'm sure the kids will love it. Kids are obsessed with 3D.

But will the kids get headaches too? That's the question...

I'm on the fence about handhelds, sometimes I love them sometimes I don't but they sit around collect dust unless I'm traveling and I rarely travel.

I'm not really much of a fan, to be honest. I bought a PSP like 6 years ago, but sold it when I realized that all the games I was buying on it were on the PS2 and were 100x better on the PS2. And that I preferred listening to music when I was travelling.

Handheld consoles are not for me...

and especially not the 3DS.

Some pretty superduper fun games on them, though.
The DS Light was one of my favorite handhelds ever. It's so innovative what nintendo did within the contstraints of the device. they really worked to make the games fit the system, even though tthe graphics werent the best. I really have high hopes for the 3ds :yesway:
I got a major headache when I tried one, and even without the headache I'm more excited for the NGP than the 3DS.

I've read that it's like a lot of these kinds of things. Some people don't get headaches and some do. The part of the brain that is used to process this fake 3D is different from the part of the brain that processes real 3D, which is what can cause the headaches. The warnings say not to let young children play a 3DS because it can damage their perception of real 3D.

 That's freaking crazy. I can't imagine how bad that could mess up some kid's head.

 Damn, no wonder the advertising campaign isn't aimed at the uber young market (over here at least)... Makes me more excited about my non-brain-destroying NGP
I guess I've been lucky - I'm usually pretty sensitive to playing games on handheld systems. Playing on my iPhone for example does bother my eyes after just a short time.

I played street fighter for about 30 minutes last night and had no issues at all. I think the 3D makes it easier to look at for longer periods of time.

But I can see how it might cause issues for some people. A few people I know can't watch someone play a regular FPS because the motion makes them nauseated.
I love FPSs and have played around 200 FPSs by now. (probably WAY more than that). But my ex-girlfriend would get dizzy and flustered whenever she tried to play a first-person game or watch me play one.

FPSs have never had an effect on me like that, but the 3DS really does give me headaches.
It's not specifically FPS's but FPS's with a limited field of view. It's actually very common and has been prevalent since the late 60's when they started developing flight simulators. It's something to do with your brain receiving movement signals/visual cues from the primary visual cortex while your inner ear is telling your brain that you're sitting/standing still. I wouldn't be surprised if the headaches some people experience with the 3DS are associated with the same issue.

:agreed:
I just came back from Best Buy played the 3DS, I loved the joystick on it but the 3D screen was disappointing to me, seemed way more gimmick that what I thought it would be. all they need to do is put the joystick on the DSi XL and you're good to go. Just my :2cents:

It takes a bit of fiddling with the dial to get it right, but once you do it, its cool.

I tried one last night, and I'm gonna hock my 360 and the games and shit and pick one up. I've been lusting after it since. And it has SSFIV on it, one of my all time favorite games. All they have to do is put borderlands on it, and i'll be set for life.

You're gonna sell a 360 to buy a 3DS? That sounds like a colossally bad idea. Possibly the worst idea I've heard in the last year.
