Wait... you're going to recording school, and you're not only mixing on headphones, but you don't know to drop gain on heavy guitars, pump mids, and layer them to get that tight heaviness?
yes, im also at home with out monitors. I did this so i know whats specifically wrong with my headphones so i can learn to mix in them until i get monitors. Im also a live sound engineer but as for my school, you cant teach someone to do a good mix honestly. Thats up to you and your ears, Ive only been doing this for a few months(not mixing) and i know what compression sounds like while a good number of people wont hear compression for months or years

Congrats on knowing what compression sounds like. Your mix still fucking blows.

STOP USING HEADPHONES. Use your pc speakers at least.

I think you need different headphones. I like the AKG K240s. They go for about $100. But still, good monitors in a treated listening room are best. At the very least you'll want to listen on a variety of systems: good headphones, PC speakers, car stereo, home stereo, earbuds, etc.

I don't really see how the drums can sound fine in your headphones, as (like other people have noted before me), they're still buried when I listen on my headphones. The thing that sticks out to me most is the panning (or lack thereof) of the guitars. It sounds like you have at least one track centre panned, and I can almost barely hear one on each side. Two tracks, panned hard L/R would be a definite improvement. :yesway:

The mix wasnt supposed to sound amazing, it was for me to know what i should do differently in my headphones. And jason i know you dont like me, but if you arent going to be constructive then please do not post in my thread.

I have ultrasone 550 s-logic headphones.

i dont pan hard l/r because when you do that people concentrate on what ever is going on. And with the 2 guitar amps sounding completely different its easy for you to get distracted targetting on one guitar.

I am being constructive. I have said what others have agreed on. Stop using the headphones. Use your pc speakers at least.

"your mix still fucking blows", thats not constructive. The thing is, you can effectively use your headphones if you know the parameters and how to mix in them and how differently it will sound in your headphones. Which is what im trying to do.

I threw that in there cause you trying to sound cocky "I know what compression sounds like after a few months.. some people cant hear it after years."

Yes you can mix on headphones, but not ideal. Why you are being so stubborn is beyond me.

Hard L/R pan is sort of a standard when it comes to metal man, mostly because it works like 99% of the time. If you're using two pretty different tones, I'd do 2 tracks per side, mixing the two different tones on each side. Like this:

Left: Take 1, Amp A + Take 1, Amp B
Right: Take 2, Amp A + Take 2, Amp B

That way you get the blending of the two tones, but consistency across the stereo spectrum :yesway:

Edit: Made a slight mistake! Also, you WANT some slight differences between the two sides anyway, having exactly the same tone either side is gonna give a sort of mono feeling to the guitars, even if they're hard panned.

hard panned guitars aren't my favorite. since i start panning them to say between 60 - 80 each side, my mixes have started sounding better. try that.

also, the whole thing here is while you can technically mix in headphones(i can technically sing but sound like shit) it's one step above blindly setting faders without hearing the mix as it's happening.

well then to be honest i would find a different place to mix. borrow a friends room or rent a mixing desk somewhere because for real dude, headphones will never get you where you want to be. you might be able to go out and spend 500 bucks on a set that will be "good enough" but you need monitors. you can't mix with speakers close to your ears like that. thats pretty much what everyone is try to tell you.

This reminds me of when I was in recording school

That was 4 years ago (that I graduated, 6 years ago that I was just starting) and I just in the last year have started considering my mixes to be decent  I thought I was pretty amazing back then, and it took completely breaking down my opinion of my own mixes and forgetting everything I thought I knew and re-learning to use my ears and not my eyes.
