Son of a bitch, buzzing on one fret only.

Took my trusty SZ320, which has never had a single issue in the 10 years I've owned it and changed strings yesterday. I was using 11-56 but switched back to a regular LTHB 10-52 because my wrists are shot lately. Get all the strings on and in tune, start dicking around, hit the 6th fret on my low E string and BNNNCH, BNNNCH, it's not even making a note sound.

The frets are level, I took a credit card and checked across several frets, the card lays flat.

Which makes me think this is a twist in the neck. The neck had a good amount of relief in it, actually too much. I tightened it back up and got it nearly dead straight but the problem hasn't changed a single bit.

This guitar was fine before I changed strings.

I'm having a fuckin' meltdown because my JEM is so fucked that I was waiting until the New Year to get a refret, it's unplayable right now....my Strat is in pieces, my 7-string needs the pick-ups installed...I'm still tracking guitars for this fucking album and I don't have a single goddamn guitar to do it with now.

I guess you've already done it, but adjust the truss rod just a bit. Not a garuantee for success but its worth a try
Did the string get kinked? I have a fret problem right now because I accidentally kinked the low E trying to fix the Floyd.

Yeah, actually. The whole pack was smashed up a bit and every string had some bends in them. I figured the tension pulling on them would keep them straight enough, there's no noticeable bend or kink in the string at tension.

I ended up bringing my JEM and the SZ to this wonderful gentleman who has worked at M.A.E. for years now, he's refretting my JEM and took a look at the SZ. I tightened the truss rod up a bit last night because it looked like there was too much relief, but it didn't help anything. When he looked at it, he said the neck was too straight, loosened the rod a bit, the note sounded out a little better but it was still buzzing. He told me the lighter gauge isn't putting enough tension on the neck which is causing it to fret out.

So I'll take these two things into consideration- kinky strings and the lack of tension. I've got another pack of 11-56's here that I'll throw on tonight, a nice fresh, undisturbed box.

I'm VERY anxious to get my JEM back as I haven't played it in 4-5 months because the frets were just too low to be comfortable and the neck started to bow too much. There's no clearance under the damn truss rod cap/whatever the fuck it's called that Ibanez uses that's a pain in the ass, so I couldn't get my barrel wrench over it to adjust it at all. The 22nd fret was also lifting up and down depending on the weather....I actually did take a hammer to that and fixed it, but it was only temporary.

Thanks for the replies, gents. I'll post back after the string change. Really, the kinked string idea was something I never even thought of. It's unbelievable how some obvious things are completely oblivious, even after 23 years.

Oh, I should have mentioned that as well.

I've experienced a kinked string too once. I think I made at least a couple of forum threads about "does D'Addairo strings fucking sucks?" until somebody told me to try another pack of strings. Then it all was fine :flex:
If you changed gauges, I'd let it sit for a day and see how the neck adjusts, before doing anything drastic.
Ha! They're D'Addario's, too! I just REALLY love the NYXL's, but may switch back to Blue Steels. Blue Steels and Boomers were my go-to strings for the first 22 years of playing, it's only the last year I've switched over.

And I'm not touching the guitar tonight, it's just chilling in the case with the lighter gauge on it. I'll check it out tomorrow and see if it's still being a bitch. It's not like I haven't used this same gauge on this guitar for the last 9.5 years, which kind of drives me nuts, it was only the last 6 months that I switched up to 11-56.
Oddly the 2 brands that never give me trouble are D'addarios and GHS. Every time I've strayed away from them, I've dealt with strings deadening early, or strings snapping after only a week or two. D'Addarios or GHSes haven't snapped on me or gave me trouble in years. The reason I had a kink in my E-string was my own fault.

This is actually my 2nd box of D'Addario's that were bent up when I got them. I normally order them from Sweetwater, packages have been beat to shit and back. It's not the strings themselves, just what happens to them in transit.
I initially liked the NYXLs when I first got them but after having them awhile I've noticed just how much more tension they have than a regular set. Not sure if that's what's causing your problem or not, sounding more like a kinked string than anything but thought I'd add that.

It's that extra tension that gives them the sound they've got, I believe.

No change on the guitar today, might just switch back over to the 10-52's in a couple hours because I was hoping to get some jamming in with my pops today.
I've been using DAddario XL 9s for 26 years and never had a kinked one (well, I've kinked a low E a time or two at the tuner when restringing). I've ordered two 3-packs from Musicians Friend in the last six months and they show up in perfect shape... And MF doesn't charge shipping on 'em (at least not to Texas).

Hope your guy can fix your S and your Jem quickly, expertly and on the cheap.
Oh, snap! Jazzhands saves the day!!!

I got so pissed over this that I didn't touch this guitar for a few days.....all I had to do was unwind the fucking string 3x and I would have seen it right away!

This is good to know, I have a guitar I want more tension on without having to slap on much thicker strings. Rep to you my friend :)
I've had that happen before too. I always just put on a different set of new strings before messing around with setup, because the smallest kink or bend right above a fret can throw it all off, even if it looks straight under tension.
Oh yeah, if you're going for that sort of thing they are perfect and I'd say I'd probably like these a lot better on a non floating bridge or a shorter scale guitar. I'm doing the 10-52 set on my strat and its just a little bit too much tension for me for lead playing, rhythm sounds and plays great though. I might try a lighter set in the future and see how those fare since the strings themselves sound nice and bright without being too harsh in the treble department.
My hand/wrist issues are unfortunately putting me in a spot to choose my gauge, over my actual preference. I'd prefer to stick with the 11-56's for Drop C/D-Standard, rhythm playing is mostly fine, but man, when I start bending string and moving around, my whole forearm just shuts down. I used to think, "Oh, I've got carpal tunnel, I just play right through that pain....no biggie." but now it's to the point where I've lost full motion in my left wrist, I can't bend it up all the way, my right wrist can bend up 90 degrees, my left about 45. Some days the pain isn't so bad so I can get a couple hours in, others it's bad enough that I can't even think of picking up a guitar.
