Stylistic Songwriting Observation: Where did the pre-chorus go?

So, like anyone in their right mind, I fucking love 80s metal. I think the songwriting was usually a lot tighter and more inspired than most modern metal. It's difficult to pinpoint, but I think one of the huge things is that I haven't really heard a single modern metal song that has prechoruses on the level of, say, Queensryche. Seriously, what caused this style to die/diminish? A bitching pre-chorus is one of the most important parts of any song. Listen to everything here and tell me that doesn't rule. Why was it largely abandoned? Sure, pre choruses still exist, but there is nothing coming out on this level anymore.

Q: Where did the pre-chorus go?
A: The pre-chorus goes right before the chorus. Kids these days! :noplease:
Mindcrime was one of my favorite albums growing up.

I think attention spans are what happened.

People just want 4 bars of shit, 4 bars of something they can sing with, 4 more bars of shit, 48 more bars of breakdowns 4 bars of sing-alongs

Mindcrime would never get radio air play today. I don't think music has changed so much, but rather, the listener has. So what the mass media gets out to you is what other people have deemed good. So, we get katy perry and shit hogging all the air waves
Brian has the right of it. Stupid fucking breakdowns killed them.
It's just part of the overall economization of The Song. Like Brian said, if you have intro w/ chorus chord progression, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge/breakdown/solo, chorus x2, outro, there just isn't room for a pre-chorus. Prog-rock (not prog wank crap, but actual prog rock) is pretty much the only genre that still has varied and interesting song structures.
I think they were gone before breakdowns. Extreme Metal (Death Metal at that era had breakdowns I suppose, though more rare than now) was already largely eschewing that kind of structure, but I don't think that was why it never really returned.

Yeah, that's a good way of putting it.
You might like my band's song structures then, we have some weird and wonderful layouts and we do have some tracks with genuine pre chorus's. We just need to record a demo
