Well I gotta say I had been eying a HDM 100 that was going for 550 on zzounds.com but it sold.

So my question is this..... which JC amps give you that soldano SLO overdrive sound?

Doesn't have to be 100W it just so happened that looked like a great deal on a b stock amp.

Soldano amps are just out of my price range.... I think.... rare to come by on the used market and typically not cheap.

Are there other alternatives than JC? JC seems like the natural choice since I think Soldano had a hand in design at one point.

IIRC, the Rectifiers borrowed some of the SLO pre-amp design?

So did the 5150. It's the cathode follower part of the circuit, if memory serves. Pretty much every amp is a modded Bassman if you dig deep enough. The amp design community is very close knit and open to borrowing from one another.

So, to actually be helpful, if Mr Justin is correct and you've been through a 5150 already... and you didn't like it, are you sure that SLO sound what you're really after? Have you tried any non-shitty Marshalls? Tried many Mesas?

What other tones strike your fancy?

What's wrong with owning three Mesas?

No, it doesn't. I've got two Rectos and a Stiletto, and I still need a Mark.

that is a good point they do occupy similar space on a venn diagram :)

maybe it might be worth looking at amps that don't show up in 6505 or 5150 vs amp x videos on youtube lol

The 5150 is high gain with big, punchy 6L6's in the 120w power section. For something completely different, try something in 40~50w, EL34 power, with lower pre-amp gain. Or, even something ~20w EL84.

If you dig the hot-Marshall sound, try one of the more modern-sounding Splawn amps. I love those things (but would never pay full retail price because they're too expensive).
