The one most people don't talk about:
Do you want a nimble British roadster, but feel like driving it instead of working on it? Grab a Mazda Miata. I don't understand how this thing got the mantle of a chick car, since every car guy should drive one at some point. Wicked good handling, great exhaust note, and the best shifter in the world. These things are a blast to drive, easy to upgrade, and cheap to own.
I used to own a '99, with the Sports Package, which was the trim level to have: Bilstein shocks, Mazdaspeed upper strut tower brace, Torsen limited slip differential, and Nardi steering wheel. I dropped a Flying' Dog four point roll bar with cross brace in it so I could get onto the track, and then lowered it, added dual exit exhaust, Racing Bear 4-2-1 headers, and an Eaton supercharger. Dynoed at 200hp at the wheels, which was a lot for something the weighs around 2000lbs.
There is no need to buy a newer one, since Mazda is slowly ruining it: it's gotten saddled down with more cushy interior bits, a powered roof, and a hefty pricetag. Find an older one, when it was still just a pair of seats strapped to a go kart. A good one can be had with around 80k miles on it for around seven grand.
