Did anyone else have the same reaction as me the first time you heard this song?

Like, simultaneously shitting yourself while picking up your jaw from the floor?
Pretty much. It was the byproduct of simultaneously realizing that I will never have that many chops AND I will never write a melody that fucking good.

I didn't really care for his blues playing, particularly because his fingers just look so deliberate. But, I fucking love everything else he does just for that reason.

 Close enough, eh?

I swear, I was the biggest EJ fanboi mark for the longest time based off that ONE REACTION. Plus, he pretty much rules.
You, too? I spent a month learning how to play Cliffs of Dover, and I never did get it more than 80% right. Not only are there some stretches I am incapable of duplicating, but his approach to arpeggios is totally alien. He just smoked the shit out of Vai and Satch on that first G3.

5:23 = mind blown...

This was one of the first songs I "learned" when I started taking guitar lessons in the 7th grade, way back in the day. I remember going to the grocery store with my mom afterwards and I just could not get this melody out of my head.

I'm pretty sure that Shawn (Castonguay) can pretty much play that note for note. He noodled (pardon the pun) around on it a bit when we met up down here and he fucking nailed the shit out of it.

I tried learning this, and honestly I couldn't even figure out the opening free time lick (in the studio version anyway) all I could get from this song was the main chorus melody, and the rest was pretty much just beyond that.
Although honestly I don't see the whole fascination behind his guitar tone. It's not terrible, but I don't think it's even that great
EJ's tone is just far too dark and smooth IMO, which I can understand some people dig but I vastly prefer a more biting, cutting tone like Jeff Loomis'

Here's a hint - EJ doesn't play modern metal like Nevermore. ;)
