I see your point, Lyle. A bit is okay but too much is, well, too much.
Don't get me wrong - Vai is my favorite guitarist (well, he and Greg Howe are tied as my "favorite"). I was at this show that was taped for his DVD. Loved the show but there were times where I thought, "OK, enough with the random noises and get on to another song".
But the noises are part of what makes him "Vai" and nobody else.
I love listening to Vai, but when he goes off on the feedback, use my foot on the fretboard, weird stuff live I get a bit bored. His recorded music is weird, quirky, sometimes shredding, and almost always unique.
And I like him as a performer too, he has a good presence, but the weird feedback, strange crap gets old after the first minute or so. And then he tends to repeat it during the show. I fast forward through those parts.
