Congress passed a law last year to "protect consumers", which in the end just meant that banks had to find other ways to make profit. This is one of those new ways. Thanks guys!
I instantly close my business with a bank that does that to me. Chase did something shitty to me eons ago, and they lost my business overnight. There are plenty of free checking accounts for people without large balances (I assume that BoA isn't charging that fee if you've got like $10k in checking).
If I didn't travel so much, I'd drop BoA and go 100% Credit Union (all of my other accounts are with the AFB CU). However, BoA is everywhere, and being able to deposit cash at an ATM or go into a branch of my bank 5,000 miles from home is awesome.
I had this discussion with my girlfriend last night. I think it's always a wise decision to have at least one account with a major bank that is nationwide.
I've had the same local bank since 2004ish or so. Since then I've been on 2 deployments. Have visited Hawaii, moved to Okinawa, Japan and spent a little bit of time in Seoul, South Korea. I have used other bank ATMs at all places. I have used my ATM CC at all those places both on base and off. As long as you pick the correct ATMs you don't get charged and if you don't...you suck it the fuck up and deal with it. If I wanna cash a check I mail to my bank. May take a week or so but  gets the job done.
