YT: Demoing the Dual Rec's Orange channel, plus V30's vs CL80 shootout

I've always neglected the CL80 in this cab because on its own it sounds like guitar being played through a horses nose, but blended with the V30 I dig it! :metal:

Credit to Cassidy for supplying the muzak.

I like the isolated bits at the end. That CL80 sounds kinda silly on its own there, but with the V30 sounds really fucking cool.

Doesn't it just. In fact, they both sound rather shit on their own. The CL80 is a honky, bulbous, undefined mush. And the V30 (in this cab in particular) is harsh and thin sounding. But put them together, and they sound fucking righteous!

It's my bandmate's, as is the JVM, but his gear lives at mine as he never uses it unless we've got a rehearsal/gig, so I'm free to use it all as part of my studio backline :yesway:
Sounds great! What Dream Theater song is that?
Nice fuckin playin Lee
Well, Lee kicks ass.

Matt's work isn't exactly bad here, either. It's kind of cool how well those two speakers blend.

Never heard of them.

Thanks, guys. Drew, Matt didn't even have ideal recordings to work with. I'm not sure if it's just me, but I can't seem to get a very good DI out of the AFX. I don't know if that posed any problems (it isn't apparent in the final mix, for sure), but it's probably not ideal.

It's really cool to hear something I knocked up mixed so well. Matt's mixed a couple of tracks of mine before as favours or experiments, but this is the best anything I've played ever sounded. It also makes me want a Dual Rec. :agreed:

I'll ruin it for you - it makes ME want a Dual Rec, and I own one.
Poor JVM, it's never gonna get a look-in at this rate
Wow. Great material, great mix, insane solos. :yesway:
yeah, the solos were awesome, i love your phrasing.

i fuken hate you Lee

and the tones sounded great too. the speakers together make a nice mix. cant say of heard of the cl80 before.

I was going to make a thread about solo writing and performance, using this clip as an example of it not being done too well (there are a lot of mistakes in here in key places that grate on me when I listen back, and a common reason why on all of them), but I ended up really waffling on, and I don't think anyone will want to read all of it.

But I've made the clip, so figured I'd post it in here. First time I've tried multi-camera (there's just one take on the rhythms, filmed from two angles). I did do it for the lead take, but the shot wasn't set up so well, so I dropped it.

You can also compare and contrast this mix to Matt's. My mixing is clearly nowhere near as good as his! Quite sobering and food for thought on how far off the pace I am.
1) That mix is just fine.

2) I covet that guitar. :(
