I never found bass hammer-ons to be tougher than guitar ones, as long as your action is low. Heck, I have problems with "accidentally" hammering on at times with my Dingwall.He and Vai are ridiculously entertaining on stage together.
Billy does a lot of hammer-ons and must have a monstrously strong left hand.
