I found a local seller who has these amps. If you have to choose one of these very high end amps, which one would you gravitate towards & why?

Used....
Diezel Herbert $2800
ENGL Savage SE EL34 $2800
Engl Invader $2100

Thoughts?

The Herbert strikes me as much more versatile, especially with the ability to throw all those different tube types in. A much wider platform from which to work. I've heard great things about the Invader as a versatile amp, but I can't believe it's on the same level. I've never played a Diezel FWIW.

There's no choice, buy all 3  I find it odd how the Savage is more expensive than an Invader and the Diezel is the same as a Savage. The Invader is the mist expensive Engl, and the Diezel is about £1k more expensive than the Invader over here

Yeah, I'm definately leaning towards the Diezel Herbert. My experience with the Herbert was about 15 mins @ a music store. I had the master @ 1 & it was already beastly. I spent a few hours with a friends' Einstein & it was amazing as well.

I've had zero experience with the Engl other than listening to Jeff Loomis play through his Savage 120 at his house & at concerts. Sounds pretty damn nice as well.

It's the Savage Special Edition, their flagship model that's not to be confused with the Savage 120.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Diezel without a doubt. Its much less compressed than the engl. Unless you like the super compressed tone.

Really? I played the Herbert and thought the exact opposite compared to the Invader.

The Herbert is strange, it sounds huge, but its almost devoid of any crunch from my play time with it. Some people like that tone, but to me it just sounded like it was missing any rawness that I enjoy.

The Savage SE (not to be confused with the straight SE) is an interesting beast, I like it, but it is like the bastard child of the 120 and the pure SE. I think the parts I like about it are the Savage 120-alike bits rather than the SE parts.

Ah. I getcha! Not had chance to try any of the amps besides the Invader sadly, and since I live in the Lake District, it ain't likely I'll be able to yet the others anytime soon either

Also, is this to add to your Coreblade? Because that thing appears wickedly versatile as well. Maybe you don't need versatile, you just want another flavor of high-gain?

In addition to the Herbert, I came across a new Diezel VH4 locally for $2850 as well.

Herbert vs VH4? Thoughts?

The Coreblade is STUPIDLY versatile & I highly recommend it. Honestly, I have no complaints for what it does. And yes, I have a wide array of cover gigs & some pending metal gigs, so I do need lots of versatility.

The backstory:
Until last year, I was in processor/rack world for 10 years or so. I haven't had much experience in high end boutique tube amps because I just couldn't afford them. Now that I can afford them (some of them anyway), I'm in total gearwhore exploritory mode. So while nothing is "wrong" with the Coreblade, I'm just playing the field to see what's out there.

Diezel > Engl, VH4 >>> Herbert, and for fucks sake do not buy the Savage. Played just about every Engl that they made when we worked at Guitar Guitar and the only one I semi rated was the Powerball and even then other amps smashed it to bits.

Engl are the Dyson of the amplifier world. Lots and lots of hype, and no loss of suck(tion).

The savage 120 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the SEs fwiw.

Out of all those, the VH4 is the no brainer however.

Savage SE, or SE? They're different.

I've only played the Savage 120 (which I own), the Powerball, and Invader 150. I've never liked the Pball, and it's been too long since I played the Invader to remember it very well...other than remembering that it totally killed the Pball, but it was also shortly after I got my Savage 120, and I liked that more than the Invader.

The Herbert is cool when other people play it, but I don't like the way it feels to play...it's too liquid sounding/feeling...I felt like I could feel the pumping of the compression, and came away with the impression that it makes the Powerball sound open and dynamic (and I find the Pball to be extremely compressed). As far as German high-gainers go, I think I'll stick with my Savage 120 until I can afford a Larry Dino 939

Ari: I was beginning to think I was insane, but you've confirmed exactly what I thought about the Herbert.

I still stand by the fact that the Powerball is the worst high gain amp in existence, I think its fucking diabollically bad. I'd take Marshalls over that thing and I hate Marshalls.

...and the Engl Invader 100 took the top honors & came home with me.

An in-depth review is coming, but it's late now. What I will say is....

I went to a high gain sanctuary, courtesy of my new friend, Nick. I tried a Diezel Herbert, Engls (the Invader 100, the Special Edition, Savage 120), Framus Cobra, Soldano Decatone & a Mesa Road King II. These were tested through Diezel 4x12 cabs w/ V30s. There were also a Marshall JVM, Mesa Mark IV, Rivera KR7 & a K-Tre, but I had already had experience with those. All of them were extremely awesome & before going there, I really thought the Diezel was going to be the one for me. However, the INVADER 100 is the one I kept coming back too. Ridiculously articulate, tight, punchy, uber versatile & in your face!
